Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Genuine Leadership

Genuine leadership would have considered the fact that the current situation is exacerbated by COVID-19 and is no fault of anyone.

Genuine leadership would also have considered a one-year reduction in dividend payments of 25% and told the investors that the payments would continue next year as usual.

Genuine leadership would also have reduced the employee salary by 25% for one year. This way, genuine leadership would have presented that both the employees and the investors are taking the hit for one year.

Genuine leadership would also have said that after one-year, all bets are off and all options are on the table.

This way, none would have been affected too much for at least one year. That’s what genuine leadership would do but we don’t have true leadership!

25% pay cut for all? That's stupidly weak thinking. The company was overstaffed in many areas. Why pay for unneeded employees?

A principle-centered approach sounds great, But sadly, reading these boards leads to only one conclusion, that being no party is aligned with any other.

Employees despise shareholders because of the dividend payment.
Employees despise management and have even turned against their fellow employees.
Employees refuse to accept that layoffs/spending cuts must proceed despite dividend payments.

Management tentatively supports shareholders, but fails to steward their investments properly.
Management refuses to acknowledge its role in devastating EM reputation as a premier company.
Management treats employees as a commodity product and thus creates a toxic work culture.

Shareholders demand that management reduce capex and expenses to become profitable.
Shareholders do not believe EM management should be entrusted with their dividend income.
Shareholders have lost confidence in EM and will flee when stock prices see a modest increase.

The only common ground I see is the desire of both shareholders and employees to leave EM once and for all whenever circumstances allow.

Not much left here to build on. No common ground, no trust, no commitment, no confidence. And the worst is yet to come. Sorry folks, that's just the sad reality that I see.

The concept of all stakeholders, including employees, shareholders, and suppliers sharing in the sacrifice is a principle-centered approach, and one that would build long term commitment to the success of the enterprise. The current approach being utilized by senior management is just the opposite, and I think we know where that will lead.

Was that last word a typo or has a dual meaning?
