GE Ends Century-Old Development Program

HOWARD SMITH NOVEMBER 11, 2020

In the midst of a multiyear turnaround plan, General Electric (NYSE:GE) is ending a more than 100-year-old employee development program, according to a Wall Street Journal report today. The company's Corporate Audit Staff (CAS) program began in the early 20th century, but CEO Larry Culp is ending it as another part of his effort to make the company more efficient.

Since Culp became CEO in October 2018, he has worked to sell assets and cut costs to improve the balance sheet. He has had to navigate through impacts the company has faced in several areas from the coronavirus pandemic.

Culp is putting his stamp on the company further by disbanding the Corporate Audit Staff program. The company's board of directors has liked what they've seen from Culp so far, as his contract was recently extended by two years, through August 2024.

The CAS program is a five-year plan for high-potential employees to go on a rotation through various company divisions. Few of the participants completed the difficult program, according to the Journal report. The decision to end the program was also reportedly influenced by Carolina Dybeck Happe, the company's CFO who has been in the position less than a year and is helping to improve the balance sheet.

In its third-quarter earnings report last month, GE said it has reduced its debt by $11.7 billion since the start of 2020. It received $20 billion in proceeds from the sale of its BioPharma unit earlier this year, and said it has launched a program to fully monetize its position in energy technology company Baker Hughes (NYSE:BKR) over the next three years.

The next on the chopping block should be OMLP. There are so many hispanics in GE Aviation in McAllen, who come from Mexico as OMLP and then get promotoed to Managers (more like damagers). All they do is party around !!! Show me one OMLP who has turned the company around or developed ground breaking technolgy. Same story with Italians in GE O&G. They speaking in freaking Italian, without considering that if offends people around them. Completely rustic and unprofessional. If you want to be OMLP or any other F***ing LP, do in your home country. DO NOT SPOIL the US work culture.

Work with one of the few LP ppl that didn't quit in GEHC West. ITLP that can't even make a chart in Excel after 10 years. Couldn't hack IT now just a meat sack collecting pay check.

About f'n time. Those in CAS now and before thought they walked on water. With few exceptions they didn't know much and the only thing that allowed them to progress was that they had the CAS stamp. They were yes men (and women) who would listen to their leaders and wait for the next order to enact. Cult like.

Smart move to get rid of CAS. Still too late. I still see the useless leadership program employees on the org charts. I guess GE needs people who make amazing powerpoints and take credit for other peoples work. Woooo DTLP, ITLP... any good LP employee leaves immediately when they realize they could be making more money elsewhere. The useless ones stay and keep making powerpoints because no one else will hire them. The useless ones never get fired because they have mastered the art of politics. Why overpay a useless LP when a competent overseas worker will do a significantly better job for half the pay? Its OK though, all of the Artificial Intelligence being developed by GE will save the company. We have AI chat bots now. They tell you things.
