Thread regarding Baker Hughes layoffs

Is this the end of Directional Drillers in the oilfield ?

Tables have now turned with directional drilling now being considered lower end job.

Yes. DD is a dying position and has been for several years. Either you learn to do MWD in a dual purpose role, or there is limited work for old DDs. Specializing in one role won't keep you working for long.

Though in all honesty, for the few good DDs that were out there they do bring a lot of value to the client in helping to manage rig efficiency and minimizing downhole issues. Those gems were few and far between. As posted several days ago, many DDs were "a bit thick".

I had a company man offer me a DD position because he liked how I mixed cement..... so don’t see them as being the upper crust. Wireline guys acted the same way and they were silk worms spooling wire.

However, the DDs still think they are God and will fight to the end o how much BKR and the operators need them on the rig.

But, when OneBakerHughes happened, some veteran of the Field Engineer program masquerading as an experienced oilfield manager, reassured every one of the degree qualified scientists in my team that if they worked really hard they might one day reach the hallowed heights of directional driller!

It was very motivational.

Directional Drillers also lack communication and team work skills. They generally are a bit thick if you ask me.

Job prospects are very limited for DD in todays oilfield environment. Afraid they are already on the dinosaur sc-apheap in every region. Drilling a well nowadays needs modern computer, technical savvy and analytical skills skill that DDs certainly don't have.
