Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Three years with Exxon

Yesterday was three years since I joined Exxon. I think I've been here long enough to safely say that this is the worst employer I've ever had and these are by far the three worst years of my entire career. And I'm 46, so do the math. I was actually full of optimism when I started here. If I only knew then what I know now.

You poor thing. Three worst years at the worst employer? Why are you still working for Exxon? Seems like you can’t get another job and we made a mistake hiring you.

Why did it take you three years to figure this out and other than whining, what are you doing about it?

Yeah, my 10 years of experience between undergrad and grad did not count as even 1 year when I got hired out of grad school. Funny thing is, 6 of those 10 years I worked as a direct contractor for EMDC. This is called the HR culture of taking advantage of the weak.

OP - Based on the information you provided, it is safe to assume that you had 20-years of prior work-experience in other companies. But you would still have been given credit only for 10-years, towards vacation-calculation. Instead of 5-weeks, you would have got 4-weeks! It doesn’t matter that your experience may all be with reputable companies within the US - you will get credit only for 10-years.

Rest of the world gives credit for all your prior years of experience - which is the right thing to do and the ethical thing to do. When asked why is this the policy, the reply was, “it used to be zero-years of prior work experience credits for vacation before and 10-years is an improvement “!

Most EM employees who get hired from college and stay with the company for their life are like “frogs in the well”. They don’t know anything outside of their system.

Take for example how a professional’s next-job is determined in most other places. There is a job-posting system where one can look for what available jobs there are, and apply for any job (once the person has spent 2-3 years on the current job). This system gives the person the freedom to know what jobs there are within the company and empowers the professionals to choose what they want. Compare that to the control structure where one has to express interest in moving onto another job and the supervisor is responsible for finding you one! Everything is controlled!!
