Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

We used to be better than this. Not anymore.

When I joined Shell, the sentiment was “well at least we are not bad as XOM.”

But, this year we are doing what we accused y’all of doing. I was thinking about it couple of days ago. We have become what we accused Exxon of being.

Blatant lies, throwing people under the bus, and PIP for made up sh–. Have to think, how do these people sleep at night and look themselves in the mirror?

This year has brought out the worst in people.

Perfectly said, @ikv+17EC0vxP. Bumped for visibility.

A white gentleman I worked with got a bad review for being “insensitive to racism.” I am a black guy, was a great mentor and he treated me like a son. Not sure WTF that was all about. His morale is shot. Toxic, toxic, toxic. I don’t remember it being this toxic during the last cuts in 2016.

I received my first bad performance review based on intangibles, things not performance related. I had been loved by my previous management. Anyway, my manager cited that I did not complete PHA action items by their due date. This was a blatant lie and slap in my face. They were all due on time with a paper trail and the software showing what time they were done. I couldn’t believe it. It’s politics when they do this stuff. I wasn’t trying to take anyone’s job or etc either. I ticked someone off unknowingly. This is true at most companies and most places in life. Politics and personality matter more than work accomplishments. I guess in heavy technical this may not be the case.
It’s usually not about skill. I had a skilled colleague who kept to himself, didn’t promote or talk much in meetings, but did the work and was great. He fell to the bottom of my manager’s radar. I talked him up to my boss and found out the boss’s opinion of him was very different et from reality. I told my boss the guys was an introvert, but that if he reached out that the engineer would also. This stuff irks me to no end. The manager’s job is to know their people! Go build relationships!

There are actually well educated and intelligent people in management but they have zero business acumen. Many times decisions are more politically based versus business based. There is a momentum that rolls down hill to the wrench holder when bad decisions come from on high and no one in middle mgmt (i.e., A -B) will stake their position or next promotion on stopping bad ideas. I have always heard Exxon was more business oriented and from what I saw inside Shell It is not hard to believe.
