Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Why are Shell employees not as negative as ExxonMobil?

Former ExxonMobil here. I was a long tenured employee and used to have great pride in the company. But in the last few years the culture at XOM has changed dramatically for the worse. I was part of the wave laid-off during the summer (XOM lied and pretended it was a PIP program). The next wave for XOM layoffs is about to be announced any day now.

I have been checking the layoff boards for other O&G companies. I am struck by the fact that the Shell board here seems to have much less activity and posts, especially compared to the ExxonMobil board. And the posts on this Shell board are not nearly as negative towards Shell, compared to the strongly negative comments made by XOM employees off towards XOM.

My theory is that there is a lot more disgust at XOM at the way they have handled the situation. XOM lied to their employees and to the public. Their approach lacked integrity. The entire industry has suffered from the drop in demand, but XOM has handled the situation in a way that has completely destroyed employee morale and turned the work environment absolutely toxic.

What are your thoughts. Especially interested in comments from people that know something about both companies and their culture.

Make connections and talk to people who have left exxon on for shell. Talking to someone who left exxon for shell, I learned that pay was not negatively affected, and culture was much better. They described exxon as being cutthroat and more political. I had a friend who had gotten top performance reviews at exxon. Then a new manager came in and he dropped without understanding. Exxon lacks a team culture, so people are afraid to help each other to boost someone else’s rankings. This is something I continue to hear as well. There are people at exxon who are afraid to ask questions because their colleague may stab them in the back with it. A guy told me a story where he was asked to do something at exxon he was not experienced in. So instead of ask his coworkers he went and did a lot of personal research, spending a lot of unnecessary time to learn info on his own that could have been given otherwise in a short conversation.
I also hear good things about Chevron, but nothing good about Exxon. Not sure why so many myths about Exxon exist that perpetuate they being the “best” whatever that means.

Culture of fear is xom.

Shell culture is far better than Exxon Mobil. I understand XOM tried to hide things like layoffs. The company is extremely siloed in the way It runs and that XOM also has 40 year employees on the books.

I have worked for two Europe oil majors. They treat their people far better than the American companies and the people at Shell have more respect. xOM is going down and needs to get its act together on climate change to stay relevant.

Shell and CVX had mass layoffs in 2015-2016. The XOM board was totally quiet in 2015, while CVX and Shell board's lit up. The XOM layoff is just catch-up, all the mal-contents are posting now. Give this time, Shell, CVX and XOM will fire people that deserve to be fired and the silent majority that survive the layoff will keep the companies running. Many of the people laid-off deserve to be fired, but some are just unlucky

I’ve worked at Shell and ExxonMobil... key difference is senior management at EM is clueless and ignorant. Shell’s senior management is better in they are more human and progressive... in terms of their business acumen, I actually trust EM’s senior management more - they work on rationale and that means you should at least understand their motives, even if you disagree with them.

Shell’s middle management is a complete sh:t show! Lying, cheating, unethical, and honestly, just a lot stupider than EM’s middle management (talking VPs and direct reports)...

I have witnessed first hand Shell management hand out contracts to family members and threaten people in their teams to sign the contract... I have witnessed prejudice in all manner of its form...

I know one VP that literally said “this is the easiest job I’ve had, I just tell people what to do and if it works I get credit and if it doesn’t I blame them!”...

At Shell’s core there is a rot that will show up sooner or later...

Your question about why are the Shell pages less angry... well they are used to the. s - they’ve been treated like dogs for years so they assume that’s to be expected... EM are just getting a taste... when something is new and bitter, you react more against it...

I am being treated like cr@p, but at least I hope when do I leave, it'll be with a few coins.

Yeah, the culture has turned for the worse in the past few years, no surprise here. People are now being ranked for "behaviours" , which is an invitation for any manager to trash employees for all kinds of reasons and claim that that's due to perceived "bad behaviours".

Well, there was a couple of xenophobic remarks on the expats that were quickly deleted.

  • and most of the people that are being laid off since 2015 are the boots on the ground, hardly no managers. Am I wrong?

When I joined Shell, the sentiment was “well at least we are not bad as XOM.”

But, this year we are doing what we accused y’all of doing. I was thinking about it couple of days ago. We have become what we accused Exxon of being.

Blatant lies, throwing people under the bus, and PIP for made up sh–. Have to think, how do these people sleep at night and look themselves in the mirror?

This year has brought out the worst in people.

I'll go first...Shell has been pretty clear that this will happen since early this year.

  1. ) Management isn't the best but at least they are somewhat honest
  2. ) Good severance 3 weeks per year if you take the SVS
  3. ) If you do get laid off, usually at Shell you still have 2 months on payroll to find another job etc
  4. ) Shell is trying or at least attempting to do something about the energy transition...it may be gas lighting but only time will tell

5) We are used to mass layoffs...1998, 2009, 2015 and 2021

  • All these make the crash landing just a little bit smoother...point 2-4 is what makes Shell employees not as mad imo.
