Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

What greener pastures have your site's engineers left for?

Would like to see if any engineers have had success leaving for other industries (you or your peers). I'm still a recent ME grad (2 years in). Can't seem to find anything that wouldn't require an MS/MBA or large pay cut.

Stick around you are likely to survive this one. Leave after SATP if you can't stand it. I was in SGP. Usually for 4-5 years you are not impacted....however I know a few people were in upstream

I think you still get a severance of 12 weeks min I think. I wouldn’t quit unless I had something lined up. A lot of “graduate programs” out there in major cities.

Side note, sgp not necessarily protected this time around. Atleast in upstream.

I was in SGP...unless you are horrible or usually you are protected for about 4-5 years. OP i would stick with Shell until SATP is over and then jump ship...5 years into Shell is rlly good on your resume. If you are an engineer after 5 years you should have ~100k in savings/investments easily...that should ease fear of layoffs...u worked hard to get here don't dip so quick, I would sharpen other skills. Best of luck

@nrm just wondering - where are you getting the idea that new engineers in SGP are protected from layoffs? Can't you be put on PIP and be let go, similar to Exxon's strategy?

MEs are more like spreadsheet and “follow work process” engineers which thats not exactly a marketable skill. 2 years in means you havnt graduated SGP so you can’t get laid off unless you choose to take a package and leave (if they even offer you a package). My advice to you is if you want to get out now then try and get out of the oil and gas industry as soon as you can. There’s no reason why you should wait for a package since it’s not going to pay much at your years of service anyways. You’re still young, a pay cut now won’t hurt you as much especially when you still have decades in front of you.
