Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

The company has gone nauseatingly PC

The company has been bending over backwards to prove to everybody that it is not racist and that everyone is welcome. Unfortunately, they have not been bending over backwards to be great.
Focus on being great and the diversity will happen organically. When you are not focused on greatness, you have layoffs. :-(

Teradata is NOT PC, the ELT wants you to think they are, but the bias is there. Teradata only celebrates, say, promotions to women, only when it’s at exec level & visible.

Reality bites, you summed it up greatly IMHO. I can only add that yes, whilst I am thankful to be raised in an orderly family, with caring parents and an effort to put good money into education, my college lost sleep learning for some exam, totalling months on end, my working weekends and my 14h hours a day years, waking up at 5am to a full time job while still finishing faculty final years - all this sacrifice and deferral of gratification are mine and mine alone. I am not going to let anyone tell me that I got where I am just because of privilege. Least of which, those who climbed on this opportunity train because they saw it was their only chance.

HR an ME have been busy on this thread. What small small people who think spending company dollars up/down voting from fake accounts is really making a difference to the company bottom line. The irrational focus on blind "diversity" has wrought the term "diversity hire" and accomplished just the oppposite of what was intended. This country was well on its way to that colorblind society of Americans before the diversity pimps got scared that electing a black man twice would put them out of a job. "White privilege" is a device, an invention, not a reality. It is racism that no white person can ever escape from. Brilliant in it's cynicism. If you say "there is no 'white privilege', you are a racist. If you admit "there is white privilege", you are a racist. You cannot escape it, and the diversity race pimps and HR consulting firms make big bucks on the societal extortion because corporations are basically cowards and terrorized at the possibility of lawsuits and bad publicity.

Many of us see what's really going on. More and more each day. REAL racism is focusing 24/7 on "racism" and irrational race "guilt". Now go away, KCC minions, and do something useful. Your "diversity dialogs" are pathetic and more racist than anything else you can imagine.

Next person who tells me my hard work and sacrifices to be successful are due to white privilege's can come kiss my white @ss. I have zero desire to hear that PC BS from G– white guys, White HR Execs who need a firm ware upgrade (KCC!), or rookie white CEOs who clearly are auditioning for their shot at Utah's scared underwear.

Simply hire the best people you can. Otherwise, enjoy your “diversity” as you get laid off and the company crashes and burns.

The commitment to diversity is one of the things that I love about Teradata.

No argument that diverse workforces lead to success. The question is "How does a company become diverse?" If the focus is on diversity, you are likely to fail. If you focus on greatness, the diversity will happen. I want you to hire/fire me because I'm great/incompetent, not because I'm black.

"companies who are more diverse tend to be more successful than those run exclusively by the homogenous middle aged men in grey suits" - you may assert that, but in the spirit of the past greatness of the company, which I believe was based on facts, and which greatness you imply by bringing a decline into discussion (thus contradicting the assertion that the supposed aforementioned homogeneous group was so bad - why then, were they able to achieve that then?) - so coming back to your claim: where's the evidence for it?

I wonder if it occurs to anyone that this company has been in decline for many years, years before anyone had the audacity to hire women into Senior Management positions.
There is a good business reason for being more diverse - companies who are more diverse tend to be more successful than those run exclusively by the homogenous middle aged men in grey suits. Surely it's the long line of old men who were unable to keep up with the times who have got us into this mess in the first place?

Teradata has been very un-PC. It allows Macs, it runs on Linux and the cloud is furthest from personal computers.

I agree, and my argument is the following. If it was reasonably clear that the focus of the company is on professional competence _and competence alone_; if that focus was translated into an unwavering commitment to decisions made on this; then it would be somewhat less painful, even on a personal level, to accept being fired, when there was little doubt that a. it is genuinely because the company cannot afford to keep you and b. because there are others who are actually more competent. Would that painful clarity not be actually better than this uncertain swamp of uncertainty, when you cannot attribute responsibility and agency without getting into recriminations and speculation ?!
But instead we are left to question how much of the ELT team was spent on these distractions and how much of that actually resulted in actual judgement errors!
So no, I do not see as a lack of empathy to those suffering today. It may be a part of how we got here in the first place.

My suspicion is that the 'focus' is that the company has lost its way. It is paying attention to the wrong things, which leads to layoffs....
