Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

How do we fix the Unions? Here's how

this is my humble opinion. If you have other ideas please post!

First off, our power is in our unity and as I see it we need one union for all crafts at UP. Only one of the unions that we have is solely transportation and that is the BLET. The teamsters union could in theory represent all of us and we need to pick one of them in order to consolidate. We could bring other craft reps in as member bases increase, but until then, It would be ran by current BLET reps with the most experience in said hubs. They would become full time union reps from that point forward as to do this properly will not allow for part timers. They would be required to produce monthly online meetings that all members could review and vote in within an alloted time frame. We would open it up to all crafts including dispatchers, signal and mechanical and any other agreement employees at UP. The reps would be up for election every 2 years and at that time we will decide who represents us.

None of the unions will agree to do this because none will want to give up their current seat. It will be up to each hub to transfer their dues to the BLET local of their choice to get the ball rolling

As long as there are multiple locals unions, Union Pacific has you right where they want you. They play each other against one another. I've seen in the HDC how tell dispatchers to have crews do things that are against their agreements for "the good of the Railroad ", mostly because they can't manage/play their territory, because they inexperienced and improperly trained. Union Pacific believes that they are above the law in about everything they do.

Railroad workers United would Most likely be the easiest starting point. It would have my vote. Only way it could be worse is to send us all home and replace everyone with contractors. Don’t think that would turn out as good as they think it would.

We should all leave all of the current unions and start one new one.

To the union officer... we can't show up to the union meetings due to company "attendance policy" which is exactly what the company wants. This is why we need to modernize the unions to accommodate. So far the IAMAW vote on this site is winning and I'm willing to throw my dues in that hat for the greater good of all of us.

The way we are doing it now only benefits the company and I'm willing to try anything.

I’m a union officer and the first step is all crafts working together and sticking by the agreements and rules 100% Showing up to the union meetings and getting involved is the bare minimum. Our behavior towards the carriers and how we conduct ourselves is vital. A cut throat attitude is needed with all members towards management.

There is a catch to changing unions. One AFL/CIO Union cannot take over another AFL/CIO Union for one year. So we would have to be non union for a year or join an independent union or form a new one. There is the possibility that we could vote one Union out and not vote another one in.

There is a process for changing unions. I think it starts with a petition that must contain 30% of members across the system that must be submitted to the NLRB. Then there would be a card drive for the new union and if interest was high enough a vote for the new union.

To be honest, I don't care if its the united meat packers union. As long as we have decent representation and we are unified under one union. Our strength is in our numbers and all of us working towards one goal.
This company is an unorganized mess right now and if we were to come together as a local hub and eventually under system wide leadership, we could have them at our mercy. These crackhead managers wouldn't know what hit them.

BLET lmao, if you want a singular union the only way to go is IAMAW. The fighting machinists are the best at what they do. IBEW has no spine and will likely be gone from the railroad by 2030. Unfortunately the Carmen are a dying craft.
