I wonder why they didn't ask for volunteers? I know many who would have taken it.

I think they would have gotten at least half the number in volunteers. Early retirement, personal issues, health issues, childcare issues, etc. There are tons of reasons for volunteering.
I was read to retire so this came at an opportune time for me. I know many others in their late 50's and early 60's that are not ready or able to retire. Did everyone see in the "package" mention of "exhibit A" which is a list of everyone who was impacted by this. Wonder why that wasn't included in the "package". I hope someone gets a lawyer to review if there is a age descrimenation issue here
Yesterday I took a look at the current openings in St. Pete, there were like 2 dozen. Nothing even close to my field of expertise. Then wondering once they open more positions and don't know when that could happen, if they will be willing to rehire someone over 50 yo. If any one gets rehired please post your experience.
Just curious, has anyone tried to apply for another position? I know most prefer to move on after this and lost trust in the company. Just curious if they are actually hiring folks in a different role. Hope everyone get back on their feet quickly and stay safe!!!
Reading the comments here, I agree that probably RJ could not get that many volunteers but probably it could help. Another thing that don't know is if it's legally possible is to offer people a reduction in salary but no lay-off when possible.
Also I agree that there are (or were) many older people like me but all the ones I had the opportunity to meet were good workers and most were glad to share their knowledge.
I’m a nearly 2 decade employee and am in a very difficult situation in my personal life right now. I would have volunteered to leave with that kind of severance. I guess they figured there weren’t enough employees like me. Fourteen people who I either worked with directly or saw in the hallways (pre pandemic) were let go. I feel so bad for them. It won’t be the same, ever.

That's what I thought. Why not do like other companies? Ask for early retirement folks. It would be a win-win situation. Then again, this is Paul's 3rd known layoff event in 19 years for companies he lead.
They should have, they are incompetent tho
If they ask for volunteers, they reveal that they are laying off, which gets most people anxious.
This anxiety then reduces productivity.
