Thread regarding Discover Financial Services layoffs

Shameful behavior

I don’t know why I didn’t catch this until several hours after the announcement, but when I realized this had nothing to do with covid19 or the economy (as Roger’s email made clear) and was just part of Amir’s reorganization I was p-ss-d.

Same here. I understand coronavirus-caused layoffs - plenty of companies were forced to lay off people they would otherwise happily keep. But to do this in the middle of a pandemic? Kick people out in horrible economy not because you have to, but because you want to? Despicable decision, in my opinion.

They're saying this so that the remaining employees aren't in complete fear of losing their jobs. Once people lose confidence in the stability of their jobs, morale drops and they begin looking for work elsewhere. That being said, I think your observation is spot on. Laying people off in the midst of a pandemic when it's been couched as "not due to COVID" could be regarded as not corporately responsible, and definitely lacking compassion.

I think they’re just saying that the decision has nothing to do with our financial position bc that would look worse to shareholders and cause our stock to plummet further. In reality, it is likely a factor in this decision.
