Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

A good judge of a company or a career is would you encourage your kids to pursue it. For UP, that’s a hard pass.

That’s just the straight UP truth. With the consistent layoffs, low employee moral, lack of a quality of life, and a general absence of ethics, it is easy to see why most railroaders have told their kids if they are paying for their education they don’t want to hear anything about the railroad. This is at best a job you stay at so your kids can have a better opportunity than you.

I was castrated by UP as part of the new hire orientation. Even if I could have children, I would not want them to work here.

I wouldn’t recommend UP to anyone.

For a junior/middle manager, working at UP is a no-win situation. Agreement employees resent you for being a college graduate, not having to get very dirty to earn your money, and for being a part of some conspiracy that they all seem to believe in. From the other side, upper management treats you as totally disposable, has no regard for your quality of life, and mostly employs you to do their dirty work (ex. writing up agreement employees for tiny infractions). The pay is also below-average for degree holders, and the hours are insane.

Nobody who isn’t working at UP is missing anything.

I wouldn’t encourage my kid to work anywhere. If you raise your offspring up right they evaluate information/situations and decide for themselves. Not everyones expectations/ideals are the same. I know change is hard. People fight it tooth and nail. It s—s to grow up in a company that allowed workers to slack off so hard through the years and now they want 7 hours out of ya instead of 3/4/5.....let’s be honest.... Y’all have taken just as much from them through the years that you feel they are taking back from you now. Haters gonna hate as the ship continues to right itself.

Heck no! Wouldn’t recommend this place to worst enemy, constant layoffs terrible morale! Only thing that leadership cares about is shareholders to heck with the employees

In the old days, it was so much fun to come to work. Vacation did not matter. After 9-11 things changed for the worst. It s—ed to work for this sorry a$$ company. As time went on, it only got worse and worse. Today where are we at? Only an outside observer can answer that question. UP had devolved into despair. And us workers are at the whim of c-appy leadership.

Now you apologists can chim in. A once wonderful place to work has morphed into one that sukks. And you a-holes will never be compassionate. A great leader listens more than dictates. Listening is absent from UP philosophy!
