Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Major layoffs began today

A number of colleagues across the org were impacted. While I'm grateful that I haven't been impacted, I feel very bad for good, productive teams that were cut. This appears deep but reliable numbers are hard to get. I won't share the rumored numbers but from my view, this is the worst I've seen in 6 years.

Time to look at VMware's management team. Are they effective?

20% cut. Make the P&L look good for spinoff

We employee's all heard our Chief Exec Management saying that layoffs for 2020 may or may not occur and they will monitor this in the these "covid-19 times" other questions from employees was more deflected as well as any acquisitions. While there won't be promotions of salary hikes among the worker bee's the upper management did take a paycut (whatever that means in a high 6 to 7 digit salary) it doesn't necessarily provide assurance to any employee. Vmware reminds me of a High School and College 4 year program and you have to be part of the 'in' crowd to get promoted or even move up in ranks. While layoffs occur they still hire in other areas in Costa Rica and India. The US Locations Employees will lose their jobs soon and we have seen this in past several years of layoffs. I am also sure there is some analytics about the number of workforce let go versus the number of new hire employee's dollar for dollar

Vmware has been known to hire a cheap labor force with titles that gives them 'importance' and where people work their asses off because they believe they are valued by those Chief Executive & VP Management. It's just a new era of work force labor without the US Government Policies, Rules and Legal c-ap.

The 'Great Place to Work for" survey doesn't include the worker bee's just so you know. Those work and used to work will know VMWare is all about politics. Their verbiage talks, speeches, charisma, persuasions (especially when it comes to vacations) etc are all pre-determine, carefully scripted and discuss behind closed doors. Sounds like the US Government right?

I would not be surprised if Michael Dell decides to just gobble up VMware as its own rather than do a Spin Off.

The George Floyd stuff demonstrates clearly the racism at foot. VMware has become a social justice course correction machine that discriminates against long term employees who are not part of a favored race.

VMware is not racist. On the contrary, VMware spends lots of time on this. They have a rigid quota system to hire on the basis of gender and minority status. They even have generous bonus incentives for upper management to meet gender and race quotas. The topic of racism (i.e. "Diversity and Inclusion") is part of almost every internal VMware company-wide call. In fact, during the Minnesota/George Floyd incident, VMware officers and management spent countless hours on company calls to address this. Many of them cried on camera for the audience. In addition, they have mandatory training to let people know that they are unconsciously racist (unconscious bias training). Lastly, they endorse and fund internal groups that focus on race and gender.

During such tough times how to handle situations like https://www.thelayoff.com/t/16qlpYd0 (harassment).... I agree with one reply that leaving should not be only option.

Never used Boxer. Been in VMware for years, not forced to use anything. So much fake info here. Racisim in EUC? BS.

Layoffs are bad news, especially since VMware is making a fat profit, even if reduced growth due to recessions/Covid-19. They could easily keep people, but instead cut. So yes, not the nice guys they pretend to be. But who believed that anyway :-) Feel sorry for anyone affected.

tl/dr - large cuts across sales and engineering IC's, increased management headcount for reorg purposes. *Slow ironic clap

The mess in the EUC BU like much of VMware is partly the result of racism. Indians are the correct color and have the tech experience. Now they occupy most key management positions. But Indians do not have American ethics and only care about making themselves rich no matter who gets screwed by their bad software.

Customer facing team- we lost 3 headcount out of a total of 7 BDs.

Core Field SE here. Our HCI/vSAN specialist team was eliminated (along with the rest of that BU), but the rep and SE both moved to core immediately. We are re-organizing at the field level, not reducing head count - we're actually expanding. I have not heard of any customer facing team members losing their jobs and not landing somewhere else here.

Still the best company that I have ever worked for, hands down. Comment below calling out racism in EUC is just stupid and untrue.

Yes, they have to report in California for the WARN Act but the way they delay the disclosure is to give 2 month garden leave so technically those employees are still on payroll and will be reported later.

All companies are/ will be laying off. Under 5% or VMW would have to report it to authorities. Some good people were impacted - ageism is a big reason.

A totally useless team in India that was just growing and growing under previous VP was shutdown by newer VP & management team.

Boxer is most f**ked up email client I have ever used. We are forced by IT to use it. I avoid MSFT/GOOG products. Anyway, EUC is a screwed-up racist BU.
