Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Put managers on PIP!

The managers/supervisors set targets for PIP'ed employees which are unachievable within the 3 months. They just wash their hands off without guidance and supervision as if they are not responsible for the result, as the ultimate objective is to get rid of the employee being PIP'ed. If they are capable, led by example and provide guidance and directions for the employees affected on how to get them achieved. Aren't these are what a manager or supervisor supposed to do? If the employees failed to meet these targets, shouldn't the manager or supervisor be held accountable and be put into PIP as well? Why only the employees are responsible for this? If the employee can meet these targets by themselves without the manager or supervisor, why do we need them here? Remove them first!

Well said, @1ofw+16hlF0Yo.

I know of several Managers and one executive who were put on PIPs and just elected to retire. No one is “untouchable “

Not sure where you got your info, but supervisors and managers were also subject to the bottom 8% MLRP program. I know if several First Lines and Managers that were put on MLRP and left.

Supervisor are not untouchable. Some of them will be going soon.
No one is untouchable. It’s a myth that has created a lot of narcissism.

Clue train: performance improvement is ment to be a mechanism to get poor performers out and replace with higher performers.

Being a supervisor at ExxonMobil is akin to being a tenured professor. You're untouchable. Even government managers have some accountability. It's sad when I have to admit the government is better than a for-profit corporation. You're points are very valid, but that simply isn't how we operate. If we did then things might be much different.

Clue train: pip is not intended to be a performance improvement mechanism.
