After almost 17 years: I would appreciate a resolution as a furloughed "team member". Goodness gracious folks, a smidge of empathy would be refreshing.

Guessing hes not doing that because this website is called thelayoff.com, not www.thehelppeoplebysharingbusinessinsightsandfiguringoutwhatskillstheyneed.com ?
No one is doubting layoffs you id–t. Many will go BYE BYE. We all KNOW THAT and are not surprised. We all get the same emails you do and know a few of the right people to know to get the latest insider information beyond emails and blog posts. Cox is going to have to depend on something else besides Manheim having a lot of used cars handle.... If no new vehicles are being purchased, then there will be a shortage of used cars in the future. DUHHHHHHH... Some other auction companies have shuttered locations because they could not fully support online sales. Could have been good for Manheim but then you have these online startups that are getting consumer attention.
Instead of being a whiny TODDLER kicking and screaming why don't you spend some time understanding the industry you are in and share business insights and help people figure out what skills they need for the future instead of your immature thoughts. You're not even helping the people, it's all about your emotions and how other people's layoffs is making you feel... Boohoo you...
Such a detective. You’re a real Columbo. Considering this post has been viewed hundreds and hundreds a of times, and others thousands of times. There’s a lot more than 3 people on here. I also hear next week many people are bye bye. Hope you’ve been saving those unemployment checks.
This is funny. Ya’ll will find out soon enough. Have fun next week, it will be entertaining for the people who are all about making sure their resumes and side hustles are on point. You’re going to need them soon enough. Enjoy! God Bless! And Good Luck! And lastly go f— yourselves :-)
Let's remember many state mandates brought during July 4th back limiting indoor gatherings.. could be as low as 25-50 max, or 50% max capacity, whichever is less. Cox wouldn't really be able to bring Manheim employees back in some states without terrible attention. With less new vehicle sales and less fleet sales, and not much repos for 2020 there's not going to be much used inventory flowing through Manheim after the current used inventory is gone. Rental companies dump their existing rental cars cus they shut down so there maybe lots of inventory now but they won't be stocking up like they used to so there won't be as many to sell thru Manheim until economy gets back to pace. I suspect 2021 will be slow and maybe even 2022. 2023 might be bad too because leases make up about 30% of new cars.... I think more people bought outright than leased this year because of low APR. So you might not see lease vehicles in 2023 once their 3 year lease is done like normal amounts. The lack of new vehicle sales and less 36mon leases and rental business shutdown is going to disrupt the normal influx of used cars. And I think people are being practical and holding onto their cars longer instead of buying a new one. Companies like carvana, shift, rumbleon are signing dealers on and so dealers might not need Manheim as much to buy and sell.
I hope Steve figured something out for the next few years.
There is one person and the only person who randomly uses CAPITALIZED words all the time on here and tries to be different people. Lol. Must be someone who is "loyal" but has held the same responsibilities for years because he doesn't the have emotional capacity and skills to move up or move out to anything else.
This board is pathetic.
And realistically change happens all the time. This is not a small business in your local neighborhood. All companies have change management training. There are books and courses on change management. You learn how different people cope with change and figure out how to still move forward. You're wearing yourself out for nothing because they're still going to execute. You have to figure out which projects are valuable and try to squeeze yourself into that team otherwise work on that resume and work for a company that isn't in a volatile industry
I can't believe people don't understand reorgs. Most leaders will not stay for more than 5 years. They tell you that in your MBA if you want to be successful you have to move up or move to another company every 2-3 years. You risk being deadweight otherwise and will be asked to step down. It's business. It's every company that needs to make money and give people at least cost of living raises. The traditional auto industry is f—ed. They can't depend on classifieds and advertisement on AT/KBB to make money anymore. Oems cut spend on unnecessary marketing and are more likely to tap into YouTube, influencers, social media,TV to advertise. Manheim was the only winner. But if you know anything about selling cars, margins are incredibly low especially digitally. Money is made from parts and service... Which not much is happening and cars are in better condition because of less use and electric options and oil changes and regular maintenance intervals are furthur apart . I don't know how the new guy can convince dealers to need Cox but he will try. There are so many options and cheaper competitions now for dealers to sell direct to consumer and buy direct from consumers without needing the Cox services.
For sure could cut 75% of the worthless layers. Not only would no one notice them gone. The only thing noticeable would be about 99% less: politics, lies, restructuring & artificial goals, among other things. Most of the layers, restructuring, and the crazy shuffling is due to SVPs, and VPs who have to constantly shake things up to be able to hit their goals. Otherwise they wouldn’t have a job. It’s like a constant game of hot potato, and horse trading to insure their safety. Otherwise actual leadership would see who is and isn’t worth their weight. They shuffle things to make people look good or bad depending on the flavor of the week.... I can definitely see them selling the software properties to someone like amazon. Manheim I would imagine they would keep, just because it’s a total cash cow. Even more so now that they have or will chop 1,000s and 1,000s of people going digital. But who knows. They’ve already sold off much of the classified/advertising properties outside of the US to eBay(I believe UK,Australia). It went under the radar. But maybe they sell US Autotrader to eBay, or maybe Amazon. Who knows.
It sounds like there are a few 'insiders' here. I've been here since we were at Lake Hearn and before the ADT acquisition. It was a family business and everyone knew leadership - it wasn't a revolving door. There were few VPs and leaders grew up in the business. But we were asked to grow 15% per year. "Double in 5".
Somewhere along the way we added Associate VPs, Senior Directors, Directors... layers upon layers. Let's be honest - alot of these folks are great people but dead weight. It starts at the top. We could cut most of our leadership team and it wouldn't make any difference.
I don't have inside info on this but i would suspect they will sell Cox Auto off. Eliminate positions, boost IBD and sell.
Did the angry people yelling at the poster or one providing information ever think they may be an informed employee who happens to know what's REALLY going on. Could they be a leader with a heart that feels compelled to give out information they arent supposed to? Maybe they mean well, with letting people know the information the company wont? Maybe they arent disgruntled, maybe theyre disgusted with the TRUTH of how this is unfolding. Maybe they hope the people led to believe they would be returning to work wont continue to hold on to hope when its a slim chance at best theyre coming back. That is after all, what this website is supposed to do. The people mad and yelling using nasty language implying they are lonely head cases obviously dont have a clue about what's really going on. Just here to cause drama and add no value whatsoever to this thread. Which would also lead someone to believe they themselves is furloughed or laid off already, confirming they add no value in general, to anything or anyone?
Can someone fill me in on what the purpose of this website is? Lmao
Get back to work or leave the company if you think they are horrible. Plenty of other companies out there unless you are an unskilled disgrace. This digital culture has created a lot of anonymous keyboard bravery. Go tell your boss how f—ed up the cox are and how they keep secrets and lies. Youre the type of person to dissect every message and action to find negative ulterior motives... No wonder mental health becomes a greater issue every year. Find some friends or a therapist. Find God to sort through your emotions and takeaways. If you're the only one complaining this hard out of tens of thousands of employees you have issues.
Tldr: get emotional help or take control your life decisions... No one is forcing you to work for them. God bless.
To mr/mrs profanity: Lay offs aren't the problem and not what people are upset about. Lay offs are a pretty common thing in corporate America, happen all the time. The issue has and always will be the way they've handled it.
“A furlough is different than a layoff and our hope is that we will be able to have as many of these people back as soon as conditions allow,” Cox Automotive President and Chief Executive Sandy Schwartz wrote to employees. “We know, though, it is impossible to predict the course or duration of this pandemic and whether any of the furloughs will become permanent.”
That is the messaging from the company. That is the line people were fed. Well guess what, for the most part conditions are greatly improved. Revenues are greatly improved, in fact possibly better than they were before the pandemic. So that would lead people to believe, as the ex-CEO said, conditions could allow people back. It's a blatant lie they couldn't predict the furloughs would be permanent, because the lay offs were planned, fully "predicting" most people would not be back. Knowing they wouldn't need them. Knowing the shift to digital would wipe out many people. They can blame it on the pandemic all they want, but their hopes were NOT to have all these people back. There was never any intention of that, and thats the problem. More than enough time has gone by to give people the straight story and tell them what's really going on. But they continue not to.
"that's probably why they were brought back because they work hard and work well. Just cus Cox employs 30 thousand people doesn't mean they were all carrying their weight. Better to run lean and pay the hard working hourly and part time people better who rock.."
These comments are doing nothing but kicking someone when they're down. I've seen a lot of layoffs happen, and it's not always the good employees that are kept and the bad ones laid off. Stop making assumptions about thousands of people you don't know.
If I was able to close my record volume sales for the past 2-3 months with out 10000 people why exactly would I want to bring them all back like ants?????? What are they going to do??? Apparently the few hundred people that came back handled business like champs and that's probably why they were brought back because they work hard and work well. Just cus Cox employs 30 thousand people doesn't mean they were all carrying their weight. Better to run lean and pay the hard working hourly and part time people better who rock.. These people actually have to go back to work physically and handled everything even with extra time cleaning and distancing.
Cox does not need to bring back people who have no duties to perform. Business has been operating efficiently without them. There are not 12500 job opening right now. Why does Cox need to bring back thousands of people back into offices? I bet if they did that they would get sh–ted on for making people come back physically to work. They had their best months and operated fine... Doesn't that tell you something about how not essential those employees were? Do you not have basic business administration common sense? This is not a charity.
People are not needed to drive cars through lanes and do as much paperwork in person anymore. These are not cubicle jobs... these are field, tactile employees who are not needed. Get over it. Be essential. Most of 12500 were hourly and part-time hands-on employees who were making more from collecting unemployment anyways. I don't know if you've realized but people prefer conducting transactions online and not have to be near people. Be essential and shut the f— up. Move on and fill roles that are actually needed during these times.
Yes it is unfortunate life has not gotten back to normal yet. Only problem is cox auto has had some record setting months recently. The business has come back faster and better than anyone ever imagined. So has the automotive industry as a whole. Many dealers are at or above where they were in 2019. You’d think with all that they could at least bring furloughed people back. But no, cox still laying off thousands and thousands still on furlough. Layoffs were planned. Don’t be naive to think when they laid out the furlough plan they didn’t have layoffs planned as well. This pandemic is being used to grow the business, cut costs, go digital, and further consolidate. If you think they don’t plan things out you’re extremely naive. It’s fluid and changes but you don’t get to the size of Cox with out well thought our strategy. Nice try though!
no one f—ing knew what life was going to be like in august when sh– started hitting the fan in may. cox was hopeful and conservative as f—. when other companies had to layoff, cox was one who was able to furlough instead with the hope that things would resume to normal in a few months. no one f—ing knew workplaces would pretty much be shut down till next year. furlough was going to last UP TO 16 weeks. it's unfortunate life never got back to normal in the summer. stop f—ing acting like cox was planning to furlough and then layoff people. stop complaining if you are still working. no one would have been f—ing happy if they were laid off in may when most people were still hopeful things would get back to normal by the end of summer. shut the f— up. it's not cox's fault closures and mandates are still in place and people couldn't f—ing take the virus seriously at the beginning.
I dont expect people in charge to give out private company information but if its true they are laying off a lot of the people furloughed at the end of the furlough, they should have just been upfront and let them go at the beginning of it. its been 4 months.
It's really dumb to expect leadership to tell you what they're planning. No large corporation does that... Look at how people react to things that don't even affect them. The same people to sh– talk here will f— systems and information up. Not uncommon for security to be hired after layoffs in the past. People are emotional wrecks.
Jesus Christ
Cox board isn't as bad as some other boards I've read. Comical. Funny how biggest complainers are those that are scared and not those that were impacted. And it's obvious by the word choice and punctuation that there really are only 2-3 unique posters on here.
The most comical thing about all this is the person mad at the disgruntled employee acting like its no big deal to be laid off or furloughed and that the treatment is ok. Saying things like they should have seen it coming, or should have been prepared, or to have a side hustle. LoL. All the while, they somehow made their way to this website, most likely the same way we all did, being worried about our jobs, being let go, and trying to find information about the company, that leadership isn't willing to divulge. Ironic?
Agree with post below. To assume there is only one "disgruntled" employee out of 12,500 people impacted is foolish. You have no idea who is posting, if it's the same person, or if they're impacted or not. This website is to post specifically about layoffs and other things impacting employees that their leadership will not be honest with them about until it's too late. Unemployment would be received wether or not laid off or furloughed. To somehow defend a 4 month furlough as a "positive" alternative to a lay off, which ends in a lay off anyway, is absurd. People deserve to be communicated with and not put on an island for 4 months with no pay check just for it to end in losing your job anyway. People have been under the assumption they would be returning, possibly before the furlough period is over, and some people have returned, but no communication who, or why. People left hung out to dry not knowing if they're coming back or when, and if they aren't coming back why they wont, vs. someone who did. It's a disgraceful way to treat people. Some have paused job searches and not looked for a new job, as to not be frowned upon by Cox if they were going to come back they didn't want to risk being not invited back. Many people have spent their entire life in the Automotive industry and due to conflict of interests with Cox cant take a role elsewhere that would conflict with Cox businesses while on furlough. In addition, while i'm sure its a small percentage, there is plenty of people impacted where unemployment doesn't come close to making them whole. The layoffs were planned before, or at the same time as furloughs, they had the opportunity to shoot people straight from the beginning, but didn't. The reason? It benefited them not to. It benefited them to keep them on pay roll, but not pay them, for whatever reason. Be it, tax credits they get, be it benefits write offs, some high powered accountant would be able to decipher it, whatever the reason, they didn't have to do it this way. But you're extremely naive to assume this in someway wasn't the best option for Cox to come out the other side of this. How do I know? Record months in July and June, but yet many people still out. Many people not coming back that are still out. Many people NOT currently furloughed will be impacted, just like they were in June and July rounds of layoffs, while having record setting months. How is that defendable? It's disgraceful, shameful, and disgusting. People impacted have every right to be upset or disgruntled. As someone else said, they've been loyal for many years, as have many others who have put up with the chaos for the last 5-6 years. The way this is and was handled is completely inexcusable. With that said, with every person who's life this will destroy, there will be one who comes out stronger and better, they'll laugh in the rear view mirror of Cox's decisions. To the people not impacted, who will be returning, keeping their jobs, while thousands haven't been paid and will be laid off, enjoy your $1,000.00 bonus you'll be getting paid for the "difficulty" and "strain" working from home has been for you. Talk about a slap in the face to ALL the people impacted. Give non impacted employees a little bonus because its been so tough on them to keep their jobs and work. Wow. is all I have to say about that. You heard it right, they're paying almost EVERY employee $1,000.00 for the extra expense of working from home. $500.00 for part time. People who return from furlough will supposedly get it also, eventually. But doesn't even begin to bridge the gap of not being paid for many months. Absolute slap in the face.
I've survived multiple rounds now at Cox. Unfortunately, I've watched most of the best talent walk out the door. Rest assured that, at some point, your name will be at the top of the spreadsheet and you'll be gone. Cox doesn't value loyalty but few companies do... Only thing keeping me here is pension and early retirement.
the sad thing is - no executive ever seems to be held accountable. And a COMPLETE lack of diversity in leadership - ZERO African-Americans. Since Rock left - i can't remember a single African-American in leadership.
Why the constant bashing of the poster that someone refers to as disgruntled employee? Safe to assume the bashing is by a non furloughed employee who feels the need to patronize; which is their right, as it is the right of the disgruntled employee to post.
This forum exists for people to post about layoffs at their respective place of work. Layoffs are happening nationwide, in all sectors of the economy. I feel for all who are impacted..
If the 12,500 people were laid off instead of furloughed back in May, they would have been p-ss-d as hell at the company for not trying the furlough route first like all the other companies were doing at the time. Disgruntled employee is not even affected. Most furloughed employees were making much more money from unemployment, and did not have to worry about paying for health coverage. Laid off back then or laid off now, disgruntled spammer on here will always complain.
Blown away that this is how the company is responding especially considering June and July have been some of the best months the company has ever had. Ever. Goes to show how much they actually value their employees.
I'm one of the furloughed also. Almost 17 years with the company. I was hoping to retire in just over 3 years. After how we've been treated on furlough, I have zero faith in the leadership of the company from corporate level to the local level. Very disappointing to be treated so badly by a company that I was 100% loyal to all these years.

There will be a big round of lay offs in mid-late August. Confirmed. Also confirmed very few who are still on furlough at this point will be returning. Most of who is still out on furlough will be let go, instead of brought back September 7th/8th. Very sad the way the company has treated these furloughed people. They haven't been paid for 4 months, just to think they're coming back at the end of it, just to be laid off anyway. Not handled well at all in my opinion, and not a way I would have thought Cox would have handled this at all.
My guess is more to come around August 27 :(
Feels like the last round has dragged on for two weeks now...
