@oquv, thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, Oxy has never once tried to get many of us LAPC'ers onboard. We're really treated as a separate company, and we feel completely like an outsourced asset. Perhaps that's because they go back and forth deciding whether to sell us or not. Regardless. Unlike you, we have not seen any good bosses or management at Oxy, all the way to the top. Yes, I know some VSPers who are still searching as you mentioned, but I also know many VSPers who are either happily retired or have very happily moved on to new positions. It's not all bad out there, as I know quite a few who are going through much less struggles and cutbacks than us. Oh well, this too shall pass, one way or another. Good luck.

LOXY here, and I hope they do lay you guys off before us, but I don't think they will due to your COC. I for one have been happy here with a great boss, and OXY money spends just as good as any other company. I am relatively new to OXY, but have never had a problem. If the virus and oil prices had not dropped we might of not had so much pain managing the debt. It is the same at every other public company up and down the board. Everyone is cutting expenses no matter if large or small. I have seen OXY stand up for their employees when things were bad like the Harvey flooding. I appreciate all the benefits they offer us and kept even during these times. The pay cut was tough, but they told us they would bring it back, and they did sooner than expected. I know LAPC that took the VSP or retired because they were scared they would not get what they thought, but they all received everything to date. It was just rumors and negative perception that made them think they had to leave. Some have been gone nearly a year now and still don't have jobs just as some of the LOXY VSP folks are still looking. I am sorry you have it so bad, and hopefully OXY can get you to get onboard to help us move forward. We all depend on everyone during these tough times, and need all the help we can get.

@nnel, LAPC here, and I hope I get laid off! Been begging for that for a year, but per Oxy, I "don't qualify". I'll gladly take the 2 yr CoC package, + extras, and finally be out of here. So I'm not sure who you're threatening, but I know quite a few LAPC who would be fine with being laid off. If not, I'm also fine with waiting out this current downturn for the next 2 yrs with the Oxy paycheck and the CoC insurance policy, or at least until something better comes along.

Once the Fed cuts off the funds in October that is the green light for stupid VH to start to trim the headcount even further
tiiiiiiimber - look out below all you LAPC people

Oxy can pay an individual contributor for 1/2 the cost in managing a system or program. Manager is just a fancy title to make employees feel important. It’s an easy way to cut cost, which Oxy desperately needs.

Sounds like someone has experience working for a circus, but I'm having a hard time understanding why circus managers have no employees. Who puts up all of those tents and shovels all the manure? Don't freak show performers have managers? Who sells all of the popcorn and beer?

Good catch, I sure hope proudmillennial was trolling! College needs to have a mandatory course called “your dumb *** doesn’t even know what you don’t know yet”.
Back to managers: my latest manager spends an inordinate amount of time explaining to me things they think I don’t understand. It’s exasperating.

All managers do not necessarily have to manage people. They could manage a system or specialize in managing a certain program.

I think managers with no direct reports should be booted out.

Oxy has done what XTO has done as well. Put people on PIP or resign. Usually based off of bogus performance reviews. Oxy is worse because they aren’t transparent about it and they state the opposite (We keep all our employees! We thing our employees are our best assets!). At least the super majors are honest about layoffs and forced reductions. Oxy’s EC lies make those who were unfairly booted out look incompetent.

managers not having any direct reports

I have been with the company for over 10 years and have had trouble with every manager I have had. Same thing with my old company. They all want me to do MY work the way THEY want me to do it, even though I always knew a better way. I say cut all of the mid managers and let the employees do the work the way we know it should be done. Things would be a lot better. Then we could get the pay we deserve too. All this talk of CAPEX and OPEX and REVERNUES is just jiberish and makes my head hurt.

If you read other sites on the board everyone says the same thing about management. Go look at Exxon, Chevron, Nobel, Conoco, etc. It is just not Oxy for sure, so maybe a lot of you just think you should be a manager. If you are not one maybe you need to take a good look at yourself and asked yourself why. It is not just the good ole boy network all the time. By the way do you see how the great Exxon/Mobile (XTO) are treating their employees. They don't like you and you get put on a PIP and dropped to the bottom 8%. Either accept the PIP or resign with no chance for unemployment with 3 months pay and insurance. Most say the PIP is a no win plan as well. And then yesterday they stop their contributions to the 401K plan. At least when we were cut in pay we still had our retirement and 401K match. We really don't have it that bad in these scary times. You can always leave as well.

I had a manager who seemed quite lost and confused every time I would catch this manager up on team projects. Manager had trouble keeping a track of direct reports, didn’t know how to deliver goals in a stream-lined fashion, and played secretary to managers who knew what they were doing. They down-sized the team as a result and moved said manager into ANOTHER manager role with NO direct reports. Essentially a secretary. Pay continues to be 3x of a individual contributor. Great at keeping chairs warm in meeting rooms though. Positive all the time.

I would agree that Oxy's current mid managers are some of the worst. I work with a guy that has no clue on what he is doing, they even had to dumb his work down for him. Meanwhile, he is collecting a better paycheck and title than a bunch of us in the group. Seems a bit wild, but that is Oxy. This is a true story. I wish I was making this up

I have been out of college for 3 years now and have worked for oxy for the last 2 years. I can tell you that I know much more about this business then most of the middle management in the company. I work with at least 7 or 8 different people on a daily basis, and based on that can tell you for sure that 30% to 40% of the 7000+ employees in the company don't know what they're doing. I know at least 5 other people similar to myself that agree with me, so we must be right.

Funny thing is a lot of those people are still there. As long as those who know whose shoes to kiss stay on, and you have attrition of technical talent, well Oxy will continue to lose value. Oxy’s bloated middle management has created a bureaucratic system that is leaving very fresh, new technical talent the only talent in Oxy. Lots of talkers, a lot less doers above 10 years of experience. Oh well.

There were a high number of people hired over the past 15 years who were total BS artists who could never really do anything technically. The organization became way too fat with uncontrolled and unconstrained hiring by managers who were not kept in check. Let’s hope this practice stops going forward. Focus on efficiency not just hiring or keeping bodies around.

When you are grossly incompetent at everything you do and it defines your culture, ethics and company, what do you expect? I'm running out of popcorn watching you people get what you deserve.

Does anyone think that US or GOM assets are even likly to sell?

All we hear about is Africa and ME.

What company in their right mind will pay anything competitive for our GOM stuff? And Oxy cant afford to sell things on the cheap. Just what makes you think asset sales will fix our high labor costs.

I agree with poster below that pay cuts and or furloughs are on the horizon.

Some will go with assets in some cases and others will just be laid off as time goes by. We are pretty thin in a lot of areas, so there might be some moving around of people as well.

I don't think Legacy APC will have that option. It is so much cheaper to layoff an Oxy employee. You guys might as well face it you are here for a while unless you decide to leave on your own.
