Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Prepare for plan B

The world now knows our performance is based on who likes who or who makes the supervisors look good. Not based on actual performance. Been at EM in various roles and here is my spill.

  1. How do you go from a high performer to needs significant improvement? Because you are too honest and provide too much good feedback. Management likes followers.
  2. Why were so many experienced and new hires targeted with a PIP? Because experienced hires and fresh grads actually believe in innovative ideas that could benefit the company but the current culture is threatened and intimidated by those who think for themselves. As a result, falsehoods were created to put those who ask too many good questions in NSI to keep the the current culture as we sink like the Titanic.
  3. As a high performer, can I trust EM? No matter the ranking, prepare for plan B.
  4. If I’m PIPed, will I make it? It is possible, but now EM is admitting to layoffs. Prepare for plan B. If you were already falsely targeted for the PIP, and you make it, the managers who put you on the PIP are liars...who’s side is HR on? Not the employee’s or you would not be on a PIP in the first place nor told you are ranked NSI in your performance review.
  5. Why do I stay at EM? I had hope initially but now I know the current arrogant culture is not going to change. I have to support my spouse, kids, and grandchildren. I’m sure many of us are in similar situations. As an old timer, it is harder for us to move careers so late in the game, but I am taking action and preparing for plan B.

Good luck!

@OP - I was with EM for over 30 years and cannot agree more. It doesn't matter which side you came from (Exxon or Mobil), this company has changed so much in the last 10 years, it is unbelievable. Middle and lower managers have grown worse - apparently just spouting whatever they learned on their last management/leadership (ha ha!)/team building course, but with no understanding of how to manage people or show any leadership skills. Of course, that is a problem that has been brewing since before I joined the company, with "high flyers" being identified for rapid promotion through various roles in the company, but not gaining the experience necessary to be anything but a "yes man" (or woman) to the managers above them. However, in the last 5 years especially, the introduction of the "woke" culture has made the company become more like a cult with full-day meetings being devoted to brainwashing staff into I&D (a worthy cause but badly executed), EM and EMRE "principles" and "values" and ..... (oh my God, I hate the number of times I've heard this in manager's presentations) ... the EM and EMRE "journey". Anyone resistant to the brainwashing or who refused to drink the Kool-Aid was an obvious contender to be NSI'd.

Very well said. This is certainly not the company I came to work for. It was easy to see why managers had risen through the ranks, now, it’s a willingness to spew the garbage handed down from above, destroy entire groups’ morale, and shamelessly embrace and force the flavor of the day down staff’s throats that gets one ahead. And bonus points if you aren’t a white male. High performers dare not be complacent, you are only a bad supervisor away from a multiple quintile plummet. Ask me how I know.

Salute to you, well said.
I am moving to a new career soon.
Feeling sorry for the company, poor leadership, mean spirited supervisor, all trying to survive when the ship is sinking every passing days.
Sayonara !
