Schlumberger has always been in a strong position related to IT. Back in the day, they owned a semiconductor company. Years later, they owned the full-fledged IT company SchlumbergerSema. IT has always been at the core of the business, so now that can adapt and provide IT related services to oil and gas customers.
Halliburton, on the other hand, is stuck in the past. HAL is a company that still uses Internet Explorer. At first, I thought we were kind of big in the IT/software space since we own Landmark. But after using Landmark applications, which are poorly designed, I understood they only had decent marketing at best. The fact that Compass is the industry standard for well-positioning databases is beyond me. There are far superior, easier to use software out there, but I guess that only shows how the industry is reluctant to change.
