Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Days of being married to your company are over forever

I am so glad to have a job I could care less about loyalty. As long as the check cashes and I am not being taken advantage of the money keeps my family going during these tough times. Throw in the health insurance and benefits and I am very thankful to have what I have for now. The only loyalty I need is from my wife and family. That is where I would expect loyalty to come from, and not from any company. Those days of being married to your company are over forever.

Well said, @3und+16M023HJ.

@vqm hit the nail on the head

No one is married to or loyal to an O&G company anymore.

I worked at four different O&G’s from 1981-2019 including 25 years at CVX. Loyalty — as a two-way street — went out the door with the big mergers in mid-1980’s. Overall I went through 16 mergers/downsizings/rightsizing s/etc... in my 39 years.

Instead, we trade our professional integrity and difficult/skilled/diligent/technical work for a nice paycheck and good benefits. A nice kicker is that O&G companies allow (allowed?) us to take large amounts of technical/professional training that makes each of us more marketable. I took so much training that developed my own classes so I can now train people in any company that pays me.

Take a lot of training and get skills in many areas (generalist) or become very highly skilled in a few key areas (SME).

I hear only 500 LAPC remain, dispersed mostly on GOM. Young inexperienced staff with key operational folks. May need more than that. Let’s wait till uncle Icahn starts rolling heads...

Integrity, work, output and honesty? Four things on a long list that I wouldn't associate with Oxy on any level.

It is important that people still have professional integrity even though you may not have absolute loyalty to the company. It is easy to develop a bad attitude that may result in you not giving the company what they pay you for. Last time I checked companies pay for work effort, output, and honesty.

So you could care less or you couldn't care less about loyalty? I couldn't care less about Oxy. A means to an end.

A marriage to Oxy would be the definition of a degrading and abusive relationship.
