Thread regarding United Airlines (United Continental Holdings Inc. - UAL Corp.) layoffs

Two Dangerous Assumptions Right Now

1) Furloughed Employees aren't layoffs, they will be recalled

2) Everything will get back to "normal" soon and we'll all have our jobs back.

Yes, even with all that's going on, many people still make these assumptions, simply because they have to, they were not prepared financially, emotionally, or any other way. So now they will double down on their first mistakes and fail to use what little time/ money they have as a buffer to make the necessary decisions they should've made months ago, but definitely should be making now.

How long do you think you can hold out on nothing but employment benefits? Do that math, because that's how long you have before you won't be able to pay for the roof over your head and food in your mouth.

Resist "Magical Thinking" which will whisper sweet lies in your ears that somehow, someway, everything will magically work itself out, without you changing anything.

It won't, and when the day comes you literally have to start packing your stuff, not even having a new home to move into, reality will hit you like a truck.

Sound ridiculous? That's the reality of millions already since spring.

Ostrich syndrome, just stick your head in the sand.

I have 2 local friends who are flight attendants, and 2 different approaches to how they have handled the situation with their company.

Friend number 1 took the furlough package in March/April with American and immediately signed up for Unemployment. She then became a census worker, and after that job/contract was completed she signed up to be a COVID-19 tracer. Good head on her shoulders, hustle mentality. No job was beneath her and she didn’t boo boo or throw a pity party. She didn’t wait around in the hopes of the Feds giving another round of Cares or Heal Act Funding.

Friend number 2, complete disaster. Flight attendant with United. Told her to follow the steps of our friend with American. Nope. Didn’t take a word of advice from the friend with American. Instead she had been on Worker’s Comp for 2 years. She had no earned income for 2 years and didn’t qualify for unemployment benefits. She deferred her car payment and mortgage payment for 3 months (April, May, June), while receiving full workers comp of $4k a month. She was able to make those payments, but spent money like a drunken sailor. She finally went back to work in July. Then bam, received a WARN notice of layoffs. Doesn’t qualify for unemployment because of no earned income reporting for 2+ years, and is terrified of the October 1st doomsday. Already used up her ability to defer her car and mortgage payments. She’s hopeful for a round 2 of federal funding. Even though thousands raised their hand for furlough or early retirement she doesn’t make the cut off date and years of service.

Lesson, don’t stick your head in the sand.

With the election around the corner..... there might be another $20 billion grant to keep everyone happy until election is over.

United and American Airlines are the 2 companies with the most debt and overhead.

The public doesn’t feel sorry. United is poorly run and you didn’t see the UAW and auto workers begging for payroll and be paid to sit on their behinds did you? The auto companies paid they loans back.

United tells people to write their elected representatives for more money yet millions of other Americans do not get paid.
