The government wasn't going to use Nextel's old technology for first responders because Verizon and AT&T has always had armies of lobbyists ready to stop these kinds of initiatives by the competition. Also, I recall a major engineering snafu in the Nextel technology that came to light only after the merger with Sprint. It was something that wasn't fully disclosed by Nextel before the merger. It caused a lot of extra work to correct the issue.

Honestly won't be surprised if there's more layoffs.

Some old Sprint org is still making stupid decisions to grow all top heavy hierarchy after the merger. Let's just increase that pay gap and deliver amazing lip services so things will go well. /s

This is total Nonsense below. I was a Nextel employee and was hired by Sprint two years before the merger with Nextel. I moved to Sprint because of money and not other reason. As an engineer I worked on both networks. The Nextel network was GREAT and totally out performed Sprints network on all the KPI's. However Nextel did not have a plan to integrate the 4G plan it had well before Sprint even thought about 4G. This is where it all went wrong. Sprint got it's 4G plan directly from Nextel and they choose the wrong tech (WiMAX) which cooked Sprint's goose. Another big massive blunder by SPRINT was not to offload and maintain the Nextel system to Police/Fire/local and Federal government. This was on the table and the id–ts running SPRINT turned it down. Now we have "First Net" where SPRINT could have had it all!

Sprint was a wretched company that always made the wrong decisions. They had a gem "Nextel" in their hands and they did nothing with it. Sprint could have been "First Net" and served all the governments nation wide with a rock solid network which had a LTE design built into it too! id–t at Sprint always dropped the ball and Sprint is no longer as even the Sprint name is going away. Sprint is the poster child of how NOT to run a company and hit has NOTHING to do with Nextel.

"It's obvious a lot of people on this board have never read about how acquisitions work. One company buys another makes the changes it wants to – plain and simple. Nextel knew it was going downhill quickly with its antiquated technology, so the CEO called the Sprint CEO and s—ered him into buying Nextel. Some of the technology problems in the network weren't disclosed by Nextel before the acquisition by Sprint, so Sprint had to spend more than anticipated to integrate the network into its own. "

Whoever thinks BOOST will become a serious contender is smoking. It will never happen and those at Softbank/Deutsche Tel know it. BOOST just does not have the footprint that TMO or Sprint has. BOOST becoming the "4th" major carrier is as stupid as when Sprint spun off Embarq. The entire Sprint acquisition is based on who was paid what and how much. State regulators knew early on that once the "merger" happened, thousands of jobs will be lost despite all the promises Softbank and TMO made. Sprint + TMO is a marriage made in heaven – both companies offer bad service and a toxic work environment.

Nextel was limping along when its CEO called the Sprint CEO and offered up the idea of an acquisition by Sprint of Nextel. That call wouldn't have been made if the writing wasn't on the wall.

There's no doubt that T-Mobile is a formidable competitor in the wireless market. T-Mobile is now second in number of subscribers, overtaking AT&T after the acquisition of Sprint. Part of the agreement for the acquisition was that Sprint would divest itself of Boost. A Democratic administration generally looks down on companies getting bigger. That was one reason why it didn't happen when Obama was in office.

Interesting how during the Obama years, the Sprint / TMO merger was denied. Did they not pay the politicians then for approval? Even with the merger, Sprint / TMO still lags behind. Two bad carriers does not equal 1 good one. Maybe they should go eat up Boost now too.

Verizon and AT&T have always been the deep-pocketed bullies on the wireless telecom block. Both companies are in the top-10 of public companies in the last decade for spending the most on lobbyists. Maybe that's why the phone plans of these two companies are so expensive – to pay for the expensive lobbyists (and the many pensioners at those companies). Politicians and regulators became aware that a T-Mobile-Sprint hook-up was going to help bring a strong third competitor to the wireless telecom market. That's how it got done.

It all depends on how much T-Mo is willing to pay the politicians and regulators. That is, afterall, how they got approval for the acquisition of Sprint. If T-Mo ever reports their numbers truthfully, eveyone will see how “big” they are.

T-Mobile won't be eaten up for a long time, if ever. It's too big. No regulators or politicians are going to allow a company to swallow T-Mobile. If you believe that, you weren't following the back-and-forth among regulators and politicians during the T-Mobile acquisition of Sprint.

The Nextel CEO called up the Sprint CEO at the time and asked about the possibility of Sprint being interested in buying out Nextel. The Nextel CEO knew the end was coming quickly for the company and needed a way to get out before the company died on its own. It was a poor decision by the Sprint CEO to take the bait, but he did.

Sprint had potential back in the day but was badly mismanaged. Like any company, there was good but wasted talent there. T-Mo has always been a lower tier cell service that makes false claim after false claim. They’re like KellyAnne Conway that can spin just about anything. There is something really wrong when the Director of a department is interviewing someone and doesn’t even know that the job req has already closed or gives out the wrong job req. I worked at both Sprint and T-Mo before landing at Verizon and there’s not much difference between the two. Both had bad service and a toxic work environment.

For homie’s comment about Sprint employees, boy it must stink then that more than half of his leadership is former Sprint employees. Wait for January, that “magenta” attitude is gonna get a whole lot more yellow.

If Sprint was such a good company then why did it outsource its entire engineering and operations department over to an overseas company? I guess it's now an American prideful thing these days to be outsourced to some international company to which the CEO speak English as a second language and all the meaningful decisions are made by people that don't even speak English! Way to go Sprint, must be nice to have all of your engineers working from India! Very smart! Way to make your employees happy and loyal, just outsource them! Best company ever! NOT!

yeah! Sprint! The worst! And I hope sprint people don't ruin T-mob with their grubby little paws. Word of advice to T-mob - don't allow any Sprint folks to have any kind of power otherwise T-mob will go out of business next. Just say'n

I have to agree with some postings here. I worked for Nextel, then for the new company Sprint - Nextel and after 2 years of that I left. I saw the way Sprint operated and saw it as a company that was clueless. As a long time T-Mobile employee I can say this and I mean it too! WE AT T-MOBILE DO NOT WANT SPRINT EMPLOYEES. We only want the assets and customers, what little customers Sprint has left. The reason we DO NOT want sprint employees is because you all are the losing team. We at T-Mobile beat Sprint fair as square and we over took you all to become number 3 in the USA with international operations too. Sprint was a failing company and only it's assets are worth the effort. The faster Sprint Employees leave and go someplace else the better. It will make my job easier as I will not have to constantly be firing legacy sprint employees as am surely going to end up doing, mostly because Sprint employees are the dregs of the telecom workforce and everyone knows this. He11 even Verizon wireless these days has banned most Sprint employees from even working there because of the shear lack of competent skill sets. In other words, LEGACY SPRINT EMPLOYEES ARE NOT WELCOME AT TEAM T-MOBILE and that is just the FACTS OF LIFE!

To the Nextel fan... Nextel is also gone. Also clearly you didn’t work at either company because Nextel’s network was a dead end technology held together by spit and baling wire. It was popular with construction companies and businesses with field workers because of the walk-ie talkie feature. Nextel could see the end of the road because construction started to dip before the Great Recession and they knew they were in trouble because of that and their dead technology network needed a massive update. Sprint was brain dead to have bought Nextel in the first place as they were going to implode on their own and their IT and business expenses were through the roof. It was not uncommon to see that they had armies of consultants CHARGING lots of high hourly rates for glorified contractor work.

Buying Nextel was one of sprints many many awful ceo blunders but Nextel was a dying star.....

Sprint is a really bad company. Let's face some historical facts. Nextel, in few years in the market place equaled that of a company that has been around for over 70+ years (Sprint). What Nextel achieved in 10 years was mind blowing. Nextel actually change the entire telecom cell business. Those that want to poo all over Nextel are clueless and don't know anything about the business. I stated in this business in 1983 and I have seen it all. I worked for Nextel for about 5 years before moving over to Verizon. I just retired this year from the business. I left Nextel for Verizon right after it merged with Sprint because what I saw in Sprint was horrible company that did not understand anything about the cell business hence Sprint has been bought and the name Sprint will come to an end soon. I have been part of winning companies my entire professional career and I can say flat out, Sprint was a losing company and my proof of this is... Sprint is NO MORE! It lost in the market place because the people, the leaders, the BOD, the managers were clueless. Nextel was enjoyable and they really knew what they were doing. Interesting enough Verizon is full of old Nextel employees. In the business it was like a Nextel Alumni party at Verizon. So all of you people trashing Nextel because you are now in the same situation, go pound sand. Sprint was horrible, a money pit, a bad investment and I for on am so happy to see Sprint die, the Company name Sprint is now dead, THANK GOD!

The Sprint acquisition was about survival for Sprint. The company had very few profitable quarters in recent years. It could have eventually filed for bankruptcy or become only a regional carrier. The acquisition was the best outcome for the company.

Nextel managers were the worst. They obviously didn't have any leadership training when they were hired at Nextel. It was obvious by the way they managed.

Sprint must’ve done something right. You and thousands others stuck with the company for 17+ years. Losing a job regardless of the company is never good especially now during a pandemic. Like the Nextel merger, the TMo merger came from greed. How many millions did Marcelo, Masa, Gary Forsee get from this? How many govt officials got paid to approve this merger?

You people are true dum(b) foo(ls). Sprint was a horrible company. What Sprint did to Nextel is now being done right back at Sprint. I left sprint after 17 years for Verizon and never looked back. T-Mobile is now doing to Sprint what Sprint ruthlessly did to Nextel... How does it feel SPRINT? Feels good doesn't it!

Good luck Sprint fam. Not everyone at the OP campus bought into the T-Mo hype. Rumor is that after the new year, there will be another round of layoffs. But instead of the better Sprint Separation benefits, those impacted will receive the newly changed T-Mo package where the benefits will be significantly less. T-Mo is a T-NO for me. Porting my numbers to ATT as I type.
