Another 13 stores closing in California

https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2020-08-28/sears-kmart-up-for-grabs

At least three Kmart stores and 10 Sears locations are listed for lease on the website of commercial real estate services firm JLL. The Kmart stores are in Costa Mesa, Grass Valley and Long Beach. The Sears stores are in Burbank, Boyle Heights, Clovis, Concord, Downey, Pasadena, Sacramento, Stockton and Whittier, and the Sears Auto Center in Orange.

Sears and Kmart parent company Transformco declined to comment on whether the 13 stores were closing. All of the locations were still listed Thursday on Kmart and Sears store locator sites, but the properties are available for rent immediately, which signals that the stores could be quickly closed to make way for new lessees.

Where does it say the leases have ended for those stores?

Can someone explain this to me? I'm genuinely curious. Forgive my ignorance, but when the lease for a store ends, how come that doesn't necessitate the store's closing right away? If my apartment's lease is ending on X Date, and my landlord doesn't want to Rent to me anymore, then my butt has to be gone by X Date. So why are these Sears/Kmarts allowed to remain in those buildings when their leases have ended? How does that work?

My other point is, to the person who wrote to stop calling the media, I disagree there. Media outlets are owned by very RICH people (for example, Washington Post is owned by the man who owns Amazon). These media conglomerates have vastly more resources available than you or I do. If we can get them to dig into this stuff so we don't have to, I see that as a plus! A multi-BILLIONAIRE like the above referenced owner of the Washington Post (and Amazon) can easily use some of his resources to monitor the store closings, etc.. Let them make themselves useful.

I feel like you wouldn’t list these stores as available for lease if they were successful and you were planning on keeping them long term. At some point they will close. Maybe not today or tomorrow but some point they will close.

These stores you mention were a few among many others furnished in previous posts here that are not closing as of now, but are available for lease should the opportunity present itself. The news of all the stores listed for lease including the ones you reference has been exposed fairly recently but it’s not a newsflash by any means.

Hey list man. You need to get a life. The Burbank Sears store has been for sale or lease since February. I know. I work there.

OK, List man here, that LA Times link needs a little explanation. The reason that link exists is that I (prematurely on my part), contacted local newspapers and media in the CA, MD, and NJ markets (because that's where I saw JLL Kmart listings). I had (wrongly) assumed those stores were closing, so I got excited (as store closings are my World Series, Super Bowl, Wimbledon, & Ali/Frazier combined together) and contacted those state's local media, sending them links to JLL, hoping that they would generate "links" to store closings.

Truth be Told, that action was premature on my part. Those stores (according to the JLL guy who emailed be back) are merely available for lease, but if nobody leases them then Sears intends to just keep them open. So, my bad! I should not have contacted LA Times asking them to write this story. I had assumed the listings meant they are closing, but that is apparently not necessarily the case.

Bummer, and again, my bad! That is why I never remove a store from my list without proof. And while I didn't remove them from my list/map, I broke my cardinal rule about assuming a store was closing without first verifying links. Never count your chickens until they hatch. Lesson Learned. I will NEVER, going forward, consider a closing as official, until I have proof. I counted my chickens before they hatched, and sadly, these eggs might only be good for omelettes.
Anyway, just wanted to provide a bit of background for this LA Times story that I requested they write. Good Night all!

There are way more than 8 small format Sears. There are 100's of Hometown Sears. Regardless of who owns them, they are small Sears. Just like your local Burger King is franchised, but it's still counted as a BK.

California is far from the only state where Sears and Kmart stores are listed on JLL's website. It is just what the Los Angeles Times finds most interesting.

The Reindeer run....LOL. Boy we were run by some id–ts.
I am so greatful that my new employer has common sense and actually cares about the employees.
Good luck to those left. Life goes on and its better.

So the current 59 Sears & 34 Kmart FLS – will soon be 50 Sears and 31 Kmarts based on JLL leasing website list for CA. The article says the firm was retained by Transformco to serve as an advisor on stores across the country. Evidently CA is just the tip of the iceberg.

Please don’t anyone mention the Sears Hometown being excluded. That debate has happened on more posts on here than anyone can count. It’s called insanity for those ready to post about them!

There are currently 59 full-sized Sears stores and 34 full-sized Kmarts.

(There are also 8 small-format Sears stores, and the mini-Kmart inside the Brooklyn Sears.)

Being listed for lease isn't the same thing as closing, though it's a sign that closing is likely to eventually occur.
