Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Isolation?

Do you guys find that all your previous colleagues/bosses/managers completely isolate you after a lay-off?

I’ve reached out to a couple via telephone and LinkedIn but literally no one responds. I left thinking I’d worked with a pretty good group of people that all had mutual respect for each other but I can’t help but think none of them want to be seen as promoting someone that was just laid off?

Its because you can claim harassment by current employees. No one will risk their job for sake of conversation

A good manager would do everything in his/her power to help you find another role, not just at Shell, but even outside. However, such good managers are rare. During my time at Shell, people left over the years, and my former manager badmouth each and everyone as soon as they left. The coldness and disrespect are not normal in the industry, as I have worked at other large companies. It is cultural, not necessarily at the corporate level, but rather a subculture created by managers around you. The experience at Shell has taught me valuable lessons about what to do and more importantly what not to do, now that I'm a manager with another operator. I learned from the best, but also the worst.

I agree with those here who are saying it really doesn't have anything to do with being laid off. I am 57 years old and have changed jobs six times during my career. In my experience it is very rare that the close friendships I made with co-workers proved to be durable. Keep your chin up - there's nothing wrong with you!

The worst is character assassinations. Talking sh– about and justifying why people that got laid off deserved it. I saw it with other people in the past. So never really got too close to anyone/ trusted anyone/ expected much of anyone. Emotionally relieved/better place after leaving.

Shell breeds the worst in people. Hate it about the place ...

And yeah, the talk of respect is all cr@p. You disagree with somebody - they run away, screaming disrespect!

Same here. Left shell and lost all the connections. It has nothing to do with lay-off. It is human nature.

This is normal behavior. Happened to me to. Lost all connections once I left. They are only people you know because of work, that’s it

Mutual respect is just another Shell BVB workplace core value myth propagated by those still managing to hang on to a job and afraid to say or do otherwise. When you have truly earned someone's respect you are not treated as though you are radioactive.

Find new friends. The world is bigger than Shell.

Yes, and this will be true anytime you leave a company. Doesn’t really have anything to do with being laid off.
