What's your direct manager impact?

How would you rate your direct manager during this stressful period and why.... are they supporting you? are they motivating or demotivating? Does anyone feel loyal to their business unit because of a direct manager or is it the opposite, and they're causing you to look elsewhere?

I've worked since I was 16 and I've seen my share of horrible managers. I've been with OXY for 7 + years and my direct manager is one of the best in terms of being supportive of my career goals and a good mentor. They have stood up for me more than once against the micro-management of another manager. The only issue they have is being to lenient with low performers and turning a blind eye. Once or twice is understandable, because we aren't all perfect. However, many times the rest of the already overwhelmed team must carry the burden left over by the consistent low performer. It's frustrating when this happens.

Some people just never aspire to do better, to know more, to help more. That is fine if that is their lot in life, but don't bring others down. It makes the team look bad when we are operating so lean and we work beyond our hours to make up that incompetence or sheer laziness. They always manage to make the easiest work sound hardest in meetings, too. Amazing.

My manager refuses to believe the bad in people and this is not good in a professional environment. It's weak and it's not fair for the rest of us.

Otherwise, my manager is perfect in every way. I can always talk to them and get support for ideas or genuine, thoughtful critique. I've seen them write up a massive recommendation for someone's promotion, deservedly.

Not really sure. I haven’t dropped him from the 31st floor yet. I’m guessing: SPLAT

My manager is one of the only reasons I'm still loyal to the team.. he's stuck between a rock and a hard place on a lot of things, but still has our back and definitely protects us from a lot of the "noise" at the moment. Definitely not the case for most teams I interact with.

My manager is horrible. I can't wait to leave this place. I'm just happy we're all wfh, because I can barely stand interacting with him. He's still trying to micro manage us, and I hate it. The market isn't good, but I'm looking, and if I find something else, I'm out of here. I'd take a pay cut at this point, and I'm already underpaid compared to the market.

Well It s—s as a whole. No time frame on when we will get our promotions or raises, makes us feel like we are in a stagnant position. The management gives no insight whatsoever so I see why folks even in the GOM are dropping like flys!! Should pay your employees what they are worth

Why does this sound like HR wrote it? Why would any employee care about truly asking this.

My manager is one of the best I have had in my 30 plus years in the industry. He trust me and lets me do the job I am being paid to do. Even our VP is the same way. Hands off and just do your job. It is nice to be respected for what your expertise is.
