Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I am not PIPed but try to leave as soon as possible

1). job security is no longer there. so Pension is all b.s.
2). ranking system is unfair and never performance based. ranking system is politics-biased. whoever has a bigger/aggressive sponsor gets ranked higher. => unfair career advancement
3). they are not trimming management much
4). Growing with purpose/we are exxonmobil is dead. how can we pause the most important thing because of economic downturn. NO $$ NO Puppet Show?
5). Darren Wood is not PIPed.

Dude. Morale is low because we are the only dumb a– company pushing for everyone to come back into the office by June.

If you think morale is down because of PIPs, imagine what a layoff would do to everyone. Majority of the people I would work don't look at this site nor do they even know there is an 8% mandatory NSI target.

In response to the post about the fat management layer. I agree, but I hope you meant layers! LOL. XOM has way too many management layers. A simple look at the org charts and you see managers, reporting to managers, reporting to managers.... It can be 4-5 layers deep! It's nepotism to a degree. I see many Canadian managers here in the US looking out for and promoting other Canadian people.

I still work for the company and I'm 20 years in. This latest round of ranking is absolutely destroying moral and confidence. What makes this new system unique is that you could be in the Excellent with distinction rank this year and be NSI next year and bam, you're out the door! The supervisor/manager has full discretion on the decision contrasted to the old ranking system where HR was involved. That said, I'm actively working plan B.

Don't you worry, managers will come soon. Don't be so short sighted.

I was not pip-ed but here's a story that made me feel like an id–t and in general lose faith. Few new hires asked earlier this year about potential layoffs in the current environment and I told them Exxon does not do lay offs after the 80's fiasco, permanent staff will be fine. Not long after the CEO said in the shareholder meeting that there are no plans for layoffs. Lol look at where we are now. You can argue it's not a layoff because it's 'performance' but you have to be a special kind of stupid to convince yourself of that or you drank so much koolaid you can drown.

#2 preach! If you are not with the in crowd you are on the outside, it’s all politics regardless of your performance.

They still refuse to acknowledge that Xom has fat management layer. Their response is like “ we structure the management based on the workload and future plans”. Well, I believe if Xom hires good quality of folks, they can do their job just fine or better without micro-management or overdone LPO/LPSA. What does SLS do anyway other than talking to you once per month (normally get nothing out of 1 hr talk), and LPSA/LPO stewardship. Can you believe they put a sls on a group of 3-4 people? And that is based on the workload and future plan???

I had been given some and I have bought some. Anyway, I do regret in putting my own hard earned money into this.. frankly even I’m not hopeful looking at how things am turned out.. hopefully there will be a better time to sell away what I can, once we have a vaccine. Shall wait..

Failed engineers are promoted as managers. I’ve seen it too many times. No secrets there. It’s quite nauseating.

Lol at the guy saying look at 401k. If you are investing in EM for your 401k, you deserve to be PIP`d

Agreed. Though we survive this round, Exxon is no longer the company that we signed up for. Pretty ironic with all the time and resources spent on studies done on culture, force ranking dusted.. and the conclusion is we are perfect as before. The guy making the dough is probably the Consultants.. Darren Woods is bad.. and that is an understatement. Just look at our 401K..

If the ranking system works, those at the top should be the best of the best. The myth of the meritocracy runs deep in the koolaid, despite all evidence of the contrary.
The bottom should be littered with failed supervisors, managers, and executives. Yet, they only get demoted back to the technical track as “advisors”.

While is true the company faces 3 crisis: oversupply of the commodity, capital constraints, and sustainability concerns; another looming crisis is ignored: brain drain.
Exxon’s culture is particularly toxic within an industry that’s already unattractive and slowly dying. Without the ability to attract talent, the enterprise is doomed.

Mr. Koolaid here doesn’t know it yet.
