Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How things have changed...

Remember when excelling at your job meant you were going places at Exxon? When great work and going the extra mile were rewarded? Not anymore.

Now mediocrity is not only tolerated, it's celebrated and rewarded??? While the best employees are shown the door... What kind of incentive does it give the rest of us to do anything but bare minimum anymore???

The big layoff is coming soon. Keep on wishing that exxon will continue giving your high salaries.

See this:

Right now proving age discrimination requires a "but for" case, if only either party spearheaded the updated legislation ...

Age 54 at the bottom of the rank stack has been a thing for years if not decades. That’s long been SOP for scrounging up points to give to “high performers” whether deserving or not

Seen a lot of blind eyes towards mediocrity in my work organization with younger and/or racially diverse employees (fear of discrimination lawsuits?) while some hard working, nearing retirement eligibility employees (like age 54) are being put on PIP...... anyone else seeing this?

Got a far better offer since then lol. Just hated the experience and missed the opportunity when I struggling financially. Will return the "favor".

Good strategy to do the “bare minimum”. Have some pride or move on.

Screw Exxon and the arrogant people there. I once interviewed with them and out of the 5 interviewers, 3 were complete a–holes. One guy (controls systems manager) had so much attitude cause he got into exxon after UT Austin raking in the high salary and was completely uninterested in my interview. Since then i have move into the internet technology field. If i ever see someone like this there from exxon/energy companies applying for management positions, i'm definitely informing HR. Arrogant people coming in for the money with no interest in internet technology are not needed.

I’ve been here over 10 years and don’t really remember that at all. At least in GSC/EMIT it’s just a bunch of “manage up” a$$ kissers patting each other on the back and playing supervisor musical chairs. I had multiple years of “we couldn’t get any ranking points for you even though we wanted to” excuses with no actionable feedback that my mind is already made up about leaving. It’s just a matter of when/where at this point.

O&G industry has been going downhill since the crash in 2014. Now what does the future hold with a global decline in demand?

You are kidding yourself if you belive that only the best employees are being shown the door. There are plenty of low performers that are also being let go due to this process also. Is the process fair so that only the bottom percent is let go? No, but neither is mass random layoffs like our compitition is doing. The current mix of letting people go is obviously a mix of position and performance.

It s—s that the market is the way it is, but OPEX reductions in the form of reduced headcount was very foreseeable. It's likely to be this way for quite a while.

Agreed. I am fairly new at the company, but back when I was in schoolI used to hear about ExxonMobil’s technical prowess. No longer. Ever since Tillerson took over from Raymond, the company’s reputation and share price has gone sideways or nowhere. And under Woods the company is sliding into irrelevance, fast.
