Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Be Thankful

For those who keep whining and complaining all the time, just be thankful that you are still employed in these difficult economic conditions and pandemic. And if you hate working at Oxy so much, just do yourself a favor and leave.

For sure then you guys are the ones that will be let go last. At least APC EC looked out for you guys that way. As long as Oxy can keep paying the salaries you guys have great stability during these tough times.

Yes. Being laid off any time from now until August 8, 2022 would trigger the full CoC for all L-APC employees.

But does just laying people off kick in the COC? You might have to pay a little to get the team you want to move forward with.

That will cost you so much more than just laying people off based on performance and function. Get rid of poor performers and people doing functions that are no longer needed, including duplicate functions. That way you would not be hiring new people to replace jobs and people eliminated. Minimum severance should be 2 months as required by WARN.

If we are going to keep complaining we will never get out of this hole. Oxy just needs to send out a VSP for all ages and let anyone that wants to leave go. No strings attached just X dollars and X months of insurance. Let it apply to all employees both Oxy and APC, and all offices. Phase the people out as you their replacement is trained. The APC employees would need to realize they would not get the whole change of control, but give them something that makes it attractive. Once a person signs up there is no going back the other way. If we need to hire replacements down the road then do it, but we have to get on the same page as a group or we are doomed to fail. What is the point in paying someone for minimum effort when we can find people just as qualified that would be more than happy to work at Oxy.

Wow. Just read all of the responses below. The last one is really emotional (maybe a little too emotional). I like this site!

And you get an F in reading comprehension. My post was insanely clear. OP is defending the company and its leadership by claiming that circumstances are not as terrible as they are elsewhere, and therefore we should shut up and be good little deutsche soldaten.

I'm not calling the company collectivist, I'm calling OPs argument bs collectivist philosophy, which it is. It's a metaphor (so might want to brush up on English Lit, as well). He/she might be willing to bend over and take it from the Oxy leadership but the rest of us are not. We joined this company because Oxy cared about being successful and prized individual contribution, then it stopped doing those things. This is also the most appropriate medium to voice our p-ss-doffedness about it, apart from our direct supervisors. But they typically just sweat a little and then beg forgiveness from the VH shrine directly behind their desk chair.

@1axw+1617WfMa Just leave for another job. It really is that simple.

OK, comparing oxy to a communist country is a bit of a stretch even for this site. Think about what you are saying next time before you post. You get an "F" in social studies and a "D-" in world history. I will give you a "B" in bs to help your GPA.

OP, that is some straight-up Mao's China bs right there. Yes, be thankful to still be suffering under this failing regime. It's not even remotely unreasonable to want a pleasant work environment where you feel appreciated. Oxy has been bereft of that for years, and most of those left are fed up with it. The problem persists because of people like you, comrade, who step in line without question and sing the praises of the supreme leader.

OP,

Stop whining. Its typically Oxy of you and show exactly why peoples opinion of you and Oxy has fallen so far.

The world is so gray. If you are positioned to live life without Oxy for X amount of time and you’re unhappy, then leave. Life is too short

If you can’t go without a job for more than 3 months, look hard and get outta there.

I’m blessed to be in a great position so I bailed out of Oxy. Lots of others may have stayed. To each their own.

But let’s be clear about one thing - Oxy is a mess. Lots of others in the industry are too, but the EC is sleeping in the bed they made. Best of luck to everyone who getting what they ultimately want.

Awesome statement, I can’t agree more. I am so grateful and thankful for my job at OXY. It has been great and I pray for the financial rejuvenation of OXY.

@duq+1617WfMa if you make 40% more, the 401k match isnt that big of a deal. And in a lot of marketable positions, such a pay jump is easily possible (and much more).

What one cannot do is be a C level performer and be able to mail it in like a lot of people do at Oxy.

The unlimited consequence free gravy train does not exist elsewhere. So I stand corrected, people who want this should be thankful.

Yes, it is best to have something in hand before leaving. that's different than than being thankful to a company and industry that created a financial mess for itself.

Lots of other companies are hiring now outside oil and gas. So no thanks needed

Many of the WWII generation would have said “never give up a job until you have another one”, assuming you are not ready to retire or consult. Stick it out with Oxy until you have something else in place.

I hear that. Whether Oxy or anywhere else we are lucky to have job. I have talked to my co-workers that left under the VSP and layoffs and they say it is hard out there to find a job that replaces the one they had at Oxy. Take time and go read the Chevron and Exxon boards on this site. They are cutting large amount of employees. Exxon put a lot of people on PIPS and offered them to try and get off the PIP or resign with 3 months salary. So not only feel lucky you have a job, but that Oxy offered a good severance under the VSP and layoffs. It could have been a lot worse for our co-workers.
