A coworker is annoyingly unaffected by the news of coming layoffs because he's certain he is safe. He thinks because he's been with the company for about two decades there is nobody who can do his job better and in his mind that makes him untouchable. I think he's an id–t who's gonna get caught unawares. Am I wrong?

There was a cadre of powerful men who crushed all ideas and who belonged to their own special brotherhood cult.
I was there for 15 years. I always got great reviews. I was always learning new stuff to be able to do anything asked of me. I'm a software engineer... and I had great collaboration skills. I actually thought I would be somewhat safe since you could reassign me to other projects... 30 years of sw engineering experience meant I had a wide range of CS skills - but I got laid off because I worked on a project that got cancelled.
I worked at Bose for 15 years up until 5 years ago when I took an early retirement package. A few months before that they did a massive layoff where pretty much whole department's were obliterated. During my time there they had several layoffs besides the last one I experienced. Early on, within the first 2 years there was a huge layoff...especially in my department...so much so that all the folks I ate lunch with regularly were all gone (two long table's worth). But that one about 5 plus years ago was major. There were people that had been with the company close to 30 years that were layed off...some in upper management. Nobody is safe or indispensable...nobody!
I heard the frames were popular, but they are taking a long time to do more styles and offerings. I wish John Gordon was there he seemed like he had a lot of good ideas. Also what happened to the stove?

Bose AR is already dead and the news is in public domain:

Bose AR was a bad idea from the start.
Why wear glasses just to listen to music?
Do you wear sunglasses indoors?
How about Bose health? Are they healthy? Lots of investment but did not see product or profit.
I have not heard it so far. I speculate Could be few in AR/WiFi Speakers
Have they released any more info as to which groups/departments will be targeted for the layoffs at the end of the month?
No one is safe. That's b—s— lmao.
I could see Tijuana being sold to a JDM and I also heard DLOU could be eliminated because Tolleson does so much more of the distro
A top official who spent his career over here was also let go. Maybe this is his illusion.
No one is ever safe, even when your reviews are great and have received many awards. They love getting rid of older generation and let go 1 or 2 very young to balance the numbers.
The good old Bose is gone, as Dr. Bose. Now the id–ts don’t know what their doing.
Nobody is safe. Bose has been trending outsourcing of a variety of different positions to the CMs. This has included (at least in some capacity) design, engineering, manufacturing/supply chain and supplier vetting. It is clear this will be the continued trend. Why are so many people resistant to change?? There are better companies with higher pay and growth opportunities looking to hire. Even if you get lucky and make it through lay offs this round, what is the point of staying?! The company is not going to get better anytime soon if ever. Stop listening to the BS, update your resume and start networking. You can do it!
Not only is he potentially not safe, he also seems to lack empathy for others who may be affected and concern about what this says about the state of the company.
Massive GDE layoffs and deconstruction of that organization in 2019. Many of that same mindset unceremoniously shown the door. Core and untouchable one day (e.g., transducers, cones, etc.), not so much the next day. Outsourced with mostly PMs remaining.
Look also to manufacturing, operations, supply chain, engineering, support, distribution, etc. where 100's (1000's?) of that mindset also out the door over the last 5-8 years.
On the other hand, look no further than middle to upper management for the survivors of that mindset and their favored ones?
Definitely two camps.
