Thread regarding Sabre Holdings layoffs

Why does Sean take 8 minutes of jibber jabber to deliver the 30 seconds of news we need?

I appreciate that Sean tries, to the extent he can, to be transparent. However, we do not need 8 minutes of lecture about Sabre's financial situation and how bad things are in the industry. No amount of humanizing yourself by talking about your family visits, or explanation about the economic landscape, mitigates the impact of difficult news for us personally. How about:

"Hi, this is Sean. Things have remained tough for Sabre and across the airline industry, and I'm going to talk more about that throughout this video. But first, there are things you need to know that will have a direct impact on you as employees. As planned, we will be ending furlough for many employees and restoring you to full pay at the end of this month. However, given the new realities we're living in today, and as I'll explain in more detail in a moment, it is also necessary to make some difficult realities with respect to the size of our organization. We need to be smaller, and some of you will be impacted in our efforts to reduce our size. This is a difficult and unwanted step for us, but necessary in order to ensure our ongoing financial health. [Now go into all the stuff you talked about for the first 8 minutes that wasn't what we needed to hear.]"

Anything other than that is not a message for employees, but a message for yourself that lets you try to brunt the impact of what you're telling us and frame it in a way that you feel more comfortable with. Nobody appreciates this messaging.

Early 3rd quarter but by law they need to advise the affected employees 30-days in advance

I don't want or need to hear about the struggles or hardships of his family either.

I thought the same thing about Sean’s messaging. It’s a standard formula he uses and I agree it’s not effective.
As for the layoffs, the press release states this will occur early 3rd qtr.

As a "furloughed" employee, the only thing that surprises me is that the initial guidance is that not all furloughed employees will be terminated.

It has been suggested by myself and others that it could not possibly be more clear that the intent was to terminate the furloughed employees... the shocker is the at least for the moment it does not appear that the intent is to terminate all of the furloughed employees.

I took it as all would come back and the layoffs would happen later as the company continued to do the reorg.

Why did he said that all would be back from furlough and he is going to lay off 800 on monday? Not in some weeks

It would also be good if he had actually said that it would be 800 people so we didn't have to find that in a news article elsewhere.

But honestly, the whole thing was pointless. He didn't announce any other layoffs in advance. What's the point of announcing this one in advance? Just frightening people, lowering their productivity until the layoff, and spoiling their weekends?

There should not have been any advanced notice. It should have been just the same horrible surprise that it always is. Better a horrible surprise than days of worry.
