Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Seriously? They want us to complete IDPs when 30% are going to get cut anyway?

So my manager tells us on Thursday that he expects us all to complete IDPs in Workday.
An IDP is something "positive" that includes action items and learning that you need to complete for your next promotion.

We know there are about 40% in my workgroup that will not have a job when this is all over (I'm in UNC). It's strikes me as a bit insensitive since we are all just worried what we are going to do to find a job OUTSIDE of Shell...and now they want us to fill out an IDP when so many of us will not even be here?

Insensitive.

All of you are being played as fools. Remember, management is like boiling milk - the scum always rises to the top.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

The values of the world is changing. Shell and people at Shell just never noticed.

Good luck with the rest of your life when you finally get whacked.

I’m glad I left.

So when a male manager tells his female subordinate she can keep her job if she spends quality time with him outside of work, it’s all just part of the game. Right?

All corporate positions at all companies are a game. It’s no different anyway else. If you can’t handle it, you’re in the wrong field and it’s time to get out.

It’s a game. 10 years ago Shell was checkers. Now it’s chess. Gotta be more savvy and sophisticated now or its time to go.

I think people are tired of just playing the game. The past few days of protest in most major American cities should show that people are tired of playing the game. No one’s means of earning a living and providing for their family should be described as a game (unless some one is a professional athlete).

You need to learn, everyone knows it is BS...but you have to play the game to win. Cut and paste last year’s accomplishments.. add in a few new “training” items. Get some coworkers to agree on sign off and zoom, check the box.

Are line managers also being laid off or everybody else who’s not a manager?

This sounds familiar, and so much like the last round of layoffs, but personnel in staff positions were feeding the same c-ap to the bottom feeders and know one cared except the people who were getting laid off. I feel for those of you who thought Shell was one of the greatest companies to work for, but after the last round of layoffs the company changed it's demographics on the way it perform business and it has been it a down hill spiral headed for a crash site. I'll really be surprised to see if Shell can recover with the present business model. Shell has lost focus on one of it's main commodities and that is "People, New Ideas, Experience and Commitment"

Interesting! Did the poorly timed HR IDP change took a big tool away for managers to cull staff right when it's needed???

Then it makes sense to rush and fill the new system with the expected corporate B.S. Asap, just in case!

One of my line managers used to tell me that my IDP was "not about what you can do for your career path, but what you can do for Shell." Given this mindset, I'd say your manager is looking for company cheerleaders to help him/her resolve any conflicts about who to layoff – and possibly get promoted in the process for retaining such a "pro-Shell" team.

He wanted me to stay so nothing about not being Shell material. But instead of showing empathy he was saying that this will be a very bad decision for me and I will suffer.

Another check list for the managers to complete and to satisfy HR. In this environment, it is no longer about where you want to develop in this company. It is about where they want you to be if there is a spot for you. Those days of career development talks have been long gone.

To the resigning poster - were you also told you aren't Shell material???

Some bosses have their heads so deep up their @sses, it's scary ...

Some of the managers waste crazy amount of time on IDP and GPA. My manager was one of these a-holes.
In one of these IDP meetings I told him that I am resigning. He tried to stop me for 45 minutes and towards the end he was saying that you can't win against Shell, as if I was resigning to hurt fricking Shell.

More corporate BS, but like the other post - do play the game!

IPDs only ever mattered for high potential earlier career employees (3% of the company?) and the managers. That's how HR/higher management steer their careers. For the rest it's to make you feel like somebody cares about your career so you give good SPS scores.

But face it, your promotion will be based on good technical fit, and right place / time to make a leap to some minor team lead. Unless you're in the special category (like a female).

Just play along with the game, it all pays the same ;-) By making a rock solid IDP, you’ll show a positive mindset, good behaviors and all that c-ap.
