Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Missed Opportunity

SMH. While I have been very put off by the power-hungry folks and micro-managers, awful communication, and lack of strategy, I have held on with my belief in Vicki for some time.

Unfortunately, today’s “conversation” was a complete missed opportunity to reassure, and inspire, and it did not at all drive hope in her leadership or Oxy. It was rambling, very choppy, extremely disorganized and at times even defensive. She lost the audience in the first few minutes and never gained them back. This “conversation” didn’t serve to provide calm, motivation or passion. This was a blatant example of the fact that she cannot truly lead Oxy out of these challenges, nor create a following of her people. Why mention synergies, most of which never happened, and ramble on about values that no one has heard about nor cares about? (except the id–ts in the business transformation sham).

How can anyone get excited or motivated with this mess?

When VH started referring to a Jason Mraz song (Look for the Good), which she pronounced Jason Mars, I actually started feeling a bit bad for her desperation. When she realized she still had 30 minutes left and forgot how to tell the time on her wrist, it seemed like her face went white. I also thought her quote along the lines of believing something enough to make it materialize was exactly what we did not need to hear. Gratitude and hope will not help us here and passion is not the most important thing. It’s accountability and sound decision making.

Clearly all of the less than 1% of people with negative thoughts are on this website. What website are the 99% happy people on?

I did not catch Vicki’s mask comment, what did she say?

If her bringing up wearing masks triggered you, maybe you should find a safe space.

I effing can’t stand this place but I really can’t stand ignorant people like you who make everything that much worse. I know you got an MD from FaceBook and most of the time I’m willing to let you id_ts be but when you’re making everything worse, I could care less about your feelings. It’s not about how you feel, it’s science that contradicts your assumptions and you’re too arrogant to consider a differing opinion.

Seriously, mask shaming? Lol, ya eff everyone else. Because no one you work with has anyone at home that is at risk right?

It's people like you that is the reason this virus is so bad in this country.

Jesus, it's bad enough working for oxy(not by choice) but working around people like you definitely makes me wish I didn't have that at risk person at home and could just take the package.

Selfish prick.

The "mask shaming" comments were completely uncalled for. There are many people who feel, based on the opinions of many doctors and scientists, that wearing masks is ineffective and potentially hazardous to your health. Whether you believe that or not, it was unprofessional and foolish for Ms. Hollub to shame people who don't share the belief that we all need to wear masks and be very fearful. She lost me and likely hundreds of others when she made this unnecessary and inappropriate comment.

@bty+15aA6T5e Hi. I am a writer with Texas Monthly doing a history of Oxy. Would you be willing to speak with me on background? Do not need to quote you. Just seeking info. mswartz@texasmonthly.com

I'm ex-Oxy retired for five years, the primary reason being to get out of Oxy. I came to Oxy through Altura, a company with an amazing work environment, which we discovered was antithetical to Oxy's.

Vicki Hollub was chosen for one reason only - she checked the correct gender box. That's why Chazen selected her, and it's why she is still CEO; anyone else would have been fired months ago. I could name dozens of more competent Oxy employees at the time (although Oxy should have gone external) than Vicki. Chazen took five years advancing her through executive management posts for resume purposes only.

Her first big promotion was GM of the new Permian CO2 BU when Permian was re-organized after the Ken Dillon era (worst three years of being a Permian employee). I would think that someone seeking employment elsewhere when she was Permian's Operations Manager because the job was too stressful (she told me herself) would not be considered GM material, much less CEO. And it's been downhill since, with her Pink Petr, target quotas, saving the planet, virtue signaling circus. So it's natural for her Q&A responses to be full of generic, stereotypical code. Although not in attendance today, your description of her attitude and responses rings true of my personal experience with her.

However ...........

I don't see her actions as the primary reason Oxy is in dire straits. She never should have been CEO. Steve Chazen is the person who set this in motion by putting at risk Occidental Petroleum shareholders and employees, just to show how woke Oxy is. And to think the Board brought back the guilty. I guess since he created it, he should clean it up.

Good Luck.

@yvl

What is clear is that VH has to “Move On”

After a good start in 2015-2016, VH then started a religious cult.

Criticism of any kind was not tolerated, even constructive criticism from competent people.

Drink the kool-aid and stay in line with dear leader’s vision, or else!

Then promotions of liars, incompetents, sloganeers and butt/boot-lickers (e.g. like you).

Oxy /VH theme song should be “Give Me That Old-Time Religion” by Tennessee Ernie Ford, with a few changes to lyrics.

Glad I got out in nick of time. VSP has been very very good to me.

PS: should be interesting to listen in on the virtual shareholders’ meeting on May 29. I voted for VH to “Move On”

GV is going to allow shorts and Hawaiian shirts as new dress code! Great!!
In the middle of a pandemic and 40B debt is great to know Oxy leadership is working on the right priorities!

Honestly she needs to step down. No one in this organization believes in her anymore. She has lost all credibility and the fact that investors haven't demanded her resignation is shocking.

I gather from your tone that you would have felt the way you do regardless of what she did or said on the call.

Do yourself and Oxy a favor and seek employment elsewhere. There is no benefit in forcing yourself to be unhappy.
