The uncertainty and constant threat of layoffs has destroyed the little motivation I had left. Now it feels like it's only a matter of time before I'm show the door, and if that's the truth, then why even bother? All I'm doing now is puting in the minimum possible effort as I'm waiting for the axe to fall. If more people are feeling like this, how is it good for the company? Can't those on top see they are hurting the bottom line by treating us like this?

The company was not honest.
That’s why people are frustrated
No chill
Anyway chill guys, it’s just a job. Many other companies out there as long as you work hard. Peace
Who else is losing all motivation?
The short answer is all the hard working people. Those are really good technically. The people who produce 200% more work thn the 80% of population.
The last 5 years ExxonMobil doesn’t value technical skills any more.
It’s all BS, networking and kiss @sss.
They promote who they like that's it. If you are in their list of highflier ... you won’t go anywhere.

Every year they will cut %10....
3 years from know the company will be very small.

We haven’t made any new discoveries the last 3 years. Only Guyana. But they made big mistakes from Brazil....

It’s sad to see this happening where the lazy low skill people may stay around much longer.
To the GPS and camera comment. Good point, but not sure relevant since the IT is hardly reliable much less sophisticated. The high-level policy changes only show motive to sc-ap X. Mostly PR negative if anything on company’s “cancel people” approach. Solve for X.
To the poster of that image showing the change to rank buckets for 2020. You have guts but be careful. Turn off gps to your camera. That image has exif data showing your location at campus!
There are few real projects for truely technically talented and hard-working employees to demonstrate their capacity and contribution. The managers will devalue these and reward those who can only talk eloquently, “contribute through others”, and close to them. This company will not sustain, it will be much smaller in 10 years

upper middle 1/3 (~60% let's say) to 8%... how is that possible w/o warning? no indication my performance was of a level so bad to be let go. shouldn't another 50 be gone too? that's some training gap to overcome (esp since all years before were also upper middle 1/3...)
it's ok i don't like kissing a$$ is smells...
Bottomline had already been hurt before the pandemic. Decades of mismanagement.. it has already been lagging behind competitors. Letting go of it’s employees is just a question of when. So don’t be too upset about it.
What options are available when you are shown the door with less than 5 yrs? Do they offer a resignation or termination?
The second wave is next year's ranking. Bottom 10% gone this year. This year's bottom 10% to 20% will be next year's bottom 10%. PIP for them next year. You better be delivering alot of measurable results while working from home or you will be gone next year. Over next 2 years, EVERYONE will drop down a full quintile in ranking as the bottom 20% leave or retire. That means pay will stagnate for many, especially since competitor surveys on salaries are down. Pay raises and promotions will slow down drastically. Just like 1983, 1986, 1990, 1998. Bottom line remember that those experienced people at one time were all ranked in top third. RSU and EBU will be bad also. But in two or three years the worm will turn and independents will be hiring again from the survivors of the layoff. XOM hires smart and hard working people, they get great experience and training and even if PIP'd, they land on their feet
I have no f—s left to give.
I you think this year ranking was tough and unfair, next will be brutal. With most projects delayed or in stand by, the competition is set for who kisses most a–, who paddles around with managers, makes podcasts or gets propaganda (like IBM “awards”) to make them look great will have a shot. God forbid Brazil wells keep delivering duds.
Technical work comes cheap with an over abundance of people repatriated and the hubbub of digital “innovation.”
Do you think any manager is taking responsibility for the failures?
They’ve made clear people are disposable.
Just play the game of outlast. Continue taking salary when you plan your exit. For all you know, you won’t be let go and discover a new stream of passive income. Cheers mate
I have the possibly good fortune of being PIP'd with Retirement option. So true, said above, that one Manager's dislike (maybe you didn't compliment his genius sufficiently) can tank a growing career. In general, the company is going down the pipe - and not much future to be seen for 'growth'. All in all - depending on your skills set, always look on the bright side of life. and Whistle.
Haha to the person asking about presidents
How many Presidents and Vice Presidents being cut?
Correction to typo on ‘MRLP’ below - should read ‘MLRP’
What is MAC?
People really need to check the image at link that the poster 2 down was kind enough to provide. that image should be passed on to journalists. It makes clear the bump up in cuts this year via so called performance management. There is a document I’ve previously seen on the intranet via searching ‘MRLP’ which also laid out the jump from 3% to 8%, but what the poster below has provided is much more explicit in detail. Reminder of link:

Thanks for having the balls to post that
What is “2nd wave”?
As a manager this years sessions I attended were a disaster. Our most important asset are our people so we kept being told yet we aren’t innovating and looking at better solutions then just displacing the bottom 8%. Arrogant Exxon behavior at its finest. This along with the 2nd wave has made me loose my motivation and rethink what I want to do.

Same, and I've felt this way for a long time, even before quarantine. Now it's just magnified. And, like previous poster said, I am "working from home" but really just learning some new skills so I can make a career change.
For me it just means I’m focusing more of my time on learning externally relevant skills and keeping my resume polished. Ultimately you work for yourself and your family so do what’s best
Those at the top of most companies have no regard for the workers. They have a responsibility to the investors and are only worried about the bottom line. They are evaluated by the boards in regards to the bottom line and will do whatever is needed to keep the stock price strong.
I'm in the same boat. They'll be getting the bare minimum from me as well.
