130 maintenance of way jobs cut yesterday on the southern region

“Covid” cuts. Cost too much to buy face masks and hand sanitizer so we have to cut you guys off. But look at the bid line in December. We’re going to put up 30 jobs for you guys.

I’ve been out here for almost 15 years on the southern region and haven’t sat in the truck much while the contractors work. Usually it is the contractors sitting for the most part. Do you know the contractor welding trucks, mainly Holland’s get paid $3500+ a day whether they shoot one weld or not. That sounds more of a waste of company money to me than an actual UP employee. I’m not trying to argue with someone who sounds “company” or with someone who sounds like they have a problem with Union/agreement employees, I’ve got my 10+ years in so I’ll get paid whether I’m working or sitting at the house. I’m just trying to bring awareness to another craft losing jobs like the shops, train service and even management.

Contractors have been doing most of the MoW work in the southern region for a long time. More often than not, UP gangs would drive up to a site and sit in the trucks while the contractors did the major work. Paying for MoW employees to sit company vehicles and complain about management while a trainee clears form-B's for the contractors is a waste of company money.
