Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

OXY Culture is a Cancer

Too many unnecessary layers of middle management/tons of bureaucracy.

Who agrees?

Oxy used to be an exciting and very interesting place to work before about 2012. Something happened after that time to make it very political and overburdened with people doing busy work. It might be consistent with start of the unconventional production nonsense. This was All brought to us by another company. Any opinions about this?

This post is a bore. It's like arguing over which is better, Mexican or Italian food. It's 100% opinion, all based on each writer's own experience.

Yes the culture is a cancer but you are confusing bloated organizational structure which is common in many places with the real cultural issues.

Oxy’s culture is all about control and power and lack of trust. The highest level VPs are so far in the weeds the are missing the forest for the trees. They don’t trust anyone below them and have to do everything themselves. I’m only sticking around short term for a decent paycheck but I’ll jump off this sinking ship as soon as I find the right opportunity. I doubt Oxy will go bankrupt but leadership has made it very clear that this is not the culture I want to be associated with.

As long as I get paid and get my benefits I am okay with things. With over 3 million people with Covid and 130K plus dead in the US I try not to even think about any BS at work past today. I know three people that have died from Covid, and once it hits that close to home all you care about is staying heathy. All this BS at any job means nothing if you are dead. I can't even go to a funeral of a friend because they are not having one because of Covid. It could be a hell of a lot worse folks. Appreciate each day you and your family on on this earth. My friend left behind a wife, two children and two grandkids, and many other family members.

OP, @pup is correct!

I worked for 39+ years in the upstream O&G industry for BP (2 years), CVX (25 years), HES (5 years), OXY (7 years) before retiring in late 2019.

I was always a technical guy /SME and I created a niche area for myself so I was always in demand, only switching companies when prices were high so I could get both a raise and signing bonus.

I had an early advisor in grad school (Irving Fatt) who told me the only thing you have to remember about oil company mgmt: “They’d sell their mothers to a cathouse for a dollar.”

Remember that and you will do well.

There are too many workers in the big oil companies now to support activity at these price levels.
