Thread regarding Bose layoffs

Leave while there are still available jobs

Nobody is safe at Bose, everybody should know that by now. There is no end in sight to these layoffs and there'll be very few left standing once it's all done. Right now, there are still available jobs since a lot of people are milking the extra unemployment to its maximum. But once July ends, it's going to be a madhouse on the job market. So it's on you to decide if you want to find yourself jobless when that happens.

I was laid off in 2018 after three years with the company, I was 59 and had good reviews, always met deadlines but was told every department needed to cut staff. Odd that the staff they cut always seemed to be the ones with the company 15 years+. Corporate Culture at Bose has shifted over the years, they used to try to keep talent but in my last 5 years there I saw Bose was trying to be like Amazon/Apple/Google and tried to recruit young talent while pushing perfectly capable seasoned employees out the door. Those changes are what is k–ling the company. The seasoned engineers who knew what they were doing are being pushed out by young talent that IS smart..but doesn't have the experience to back it up. Older engineers were willing to sacrifice to make the company succeed, newer talent will stick around until "it's boring" and will leave. Bose did this to itself, it could've been great but it will fail.

Get your resume and skill set in order. I'm a software engineer with 30+ years behind me, and I always was working on cutting edge/current technologies - but still 30 years from college meant a lot of my algorithms - 'computer science' knowledge was in need of a refresher.

I also hired a company to do my resume because I hadn't done one in 15 years. I knew better than to rely on my out of date resume 'wisdom' .

If you start the process now - you will feel better about your prospects. I like freecodecamp as well as well as coderbyte. geeksforgeeks for data structures. Read up on your favorite software architecture styles. I like interactive websites - they give me instant gratification and it works better for me than reading large amounts of text. I wish the web was around when I was young.

After some new products are shipped in October or November, you can expect more layoffs because "your service is no longer needed". After March next near, there will be another round, either due to "pandemic" (that is a lie) or lackluster holiday sales. This goes on and on. It happened for several years and will certainly happen again. The company put employees in constant fear of being fired. Remember the engagement survey a few years ago? Less than 50% people were fully engaged. Do the survey now and see how low it is. Most "Managers" were not "Managers" a few years ago. They managed to become manager, but are not doing good job. Too many managers.

I was laid off pre-covid and got decent enough severance (I'd been at the company for 15 years).
the severance was worth getting laid off for. In fact - it factored into why I didn't take any of the internal jobs I was offered. I figured this would keep happening since I had zero faith in the leadership and I thought why not just take the severance and find a new job while it was still warm (October)

Respectfully couldn’t disagree more. The ship is sinking....better jump on the raft while you can. Finding the next job has to do with patience and being proactive. If your thought right now is to do nothing and see where the dust settles, you couldn’t be more behind the curve. The job application process takes months and you want the opportunity to be selective. This company is not going to get better. Period. There will be more layoffs in the short term. Fact. This is not strictly covid related. Please be smarter than the incompetent “leadership” that is currently running Bose.

Disagree with part of this. Yes long term Bose may have more layoffs. That said if you survived this round why would you try to leave right now when it’s the worst job market in decades - glut of applicants, starting summer, etc. And even if you get something employers are going to lowball you. I’d wait a few months or next year when better prospects. Be thankful you have work and options!!!
