Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

It’s time for Macy’s Workers to Unionize!

With all the restructuring and job eliminations at Macy’s, I’m surprised more employees haven’t decided to form a union. The poor manner in which these recent layoffs have been handled should be a wake-up call to those remaining with Macy’s.
With a union contract, it’s more difficult for the company to change your title, cut your salary and essentially make you do the same job for less money.
It’s time for a massive union drive to protect Macy’s workers rights!

I see both ways here. I've work with union stores and had good experiences but I will say I've had more negative experiences than positive. Its really too bad because under the right circumstances it should help

Joining a union is simply encouraging your company to add your store to the closing list. And even in union locs the company can still cut jobs, asked your friends who works in union stores. Do not waste your money paying union dues.

I’m in a union store and they can’t do sh– for me. I’m a million dollar performer and I got let go where these ladies who stood and complain all day about have to use the new dell tablet get to keep their jobs because they were hired before me. They call out every Sunday and take vacation on all holidays weekend and I had to step in and cover. I’m going to sue my union for taking my money but do nothing for me! It’s UFCW there I said it. I’ll see you in court!

In case you don’t know. A million dollars performers are big deal in furniture gallery store.

I’m in a union store and guess what, those that get to stay are horrible coworkers. Low performance and call out every chance they get. Those who work hard and give their all to my department got let go because they have less seniority. That’s how the process in union store. The union doesn’t care how hard you work they only care who pay them the most which are those who has the most seniority. I called my union representative and ask why a few good workers got let go and the bad ones get to stay and my union representative said it’s Macys’s decision so I suggested we sue that is when he said Macy’s uses the process set by the union. So... it’s not Macy’s that decides who stay and who go in the union store. I was shocked.

2 union store in my area got closed down because of low sales and guess what during the past 5 years, half the store called out on the weekend all the time but where it’s the busiest and result in lack of customer service and customers shop somewhere else.

When those 2 union stores closed, union couldn’t do anything. Hundred of people lost their jobs and guess what none of them get severance package. If the union is as good as they said they are their members should be taken care of.

So think twice if you think union is actually on your side. Union is just another company. They need cash flow and profit just like any business entity.

I would be interested in hearing what happened in a union store vs a non-union store and also the cost of belonging to the union. Do the unions really have any bargaining chips? Aren’t we, as a company, struggling for survival?

When I was hired 11 years ago, during new hire orientation they showed us this ridiculous video demonizing unions. Did anyone else have to sit through that?
