Thread regarding Bose layoffs

Next Steps: Where to start

I left Bose last year and while I know this is scary for a lot of people I couldn’t be happier with my new role and company. I’m with a much larger company that doesn’t go through seasonal layoffs like Bose. Very safe. I wanted to add some recommendations and some advice as to what helped me and the steps I took.

First - Update your resume. There are lots of resources online through Glassdoor, LinkedIn and even YouTube videos. Use buzzwords, quantitative measurables and make it concise.

Second- I heavily used LinkedIn. I purchased LinkedIn premium and found this extremely helpful. It’s a month by month subscription that is around ~$10-$15. This gives you access to see everyone that views your profile, gives you a certain number of direct messages each month, targets and recommends jobs for you based on your experience and gives you salary range and # of applicants for each job. The job I currently have is from a job that LinkedIn suggested to me. I sent a direct message to the HR recruiter who’s profile was linked to the job post and had an interview scheduled within 2 weeks.

Third - You HAVE TO hustle. You need to tailor your resume (at least somewhat) to each job you’re applying to. Not going to lie, job hunting, networking and applying is exhausting and a job in itself. The more you network and find ways to stick out among the crowd the better.

Last (and probably the hardest) - You have to stay positive and motivated. This is much easier said than done but there are better days ahead - guaranteed. I would block off 2-3 hours on Saturday and Sunday, put on those amazing noise canceling headphones, drink a ton of coffee and get after it. There are great companies looking to hire. From start to finish it took me about 2.5 months from first application to negotiation and signed offer letter.

Best of luck and happy to answer any questions!

I echo everything said by the original poster, including the timeline! Great guidance! LinkedIn is super awesome to quickly extend one's network and the same for me, find that great next stop after Bose.

After almost 10 years and "exceeds" reviews every year, I was unceremoniously shown the Bose exit over a year ago. And yes, while initially very shocked (an understatement), the world outside has been refreshing.

I would only add one other lesson learned. For the first several weeks I was spending too much time in my new job to get a new job and not taking the time to take care of myself physically and mentally. Do be super focused, do be super energized, make it your day job to find that next job, however, do take the "me time" too. It is truly okay, you have to tell yourself that over and over, and as I found, it leads to a great outcome.

As a couple of other threads noted, companies are engaging, they are hiring, they are doing great onboarding new people while WFH. You will only benefit from these companies now being up the ramp to the present "new normal" of working together.
