Thread regarding Hy-Vee layoffs

Wages cut and jobs

My husband had just found out he has to take an $8.00 an hour pay cut and become a stocker after working at a central bakery as Asst. Mgr. This during Coronavirus when they’re making record sales. WTH!?
This is what Hy-Vee does to dedicated, hard working employees who have come in every single day to provide essential food items to many communities.

This is shameful. Utterly deplorable. Corporations are totally unconnected to what their employees truly do.

I agree with you so much. I worked with Hy-Vee for 3 years, made only 12.50 an hour, and I knew every department except pharmacy! I only had regular time, despite me accepting full time two times! My co-workers acted like they were my bosses and a commodity. I knew something was wrong when my fellow co-workers would say I am back at this s* hole. Or after they helped someone they would turn around and say that b or c***. It disturbed me greatly, it was awful. I don't shop Hy-Vee and I encourage everyone to shop and the current employees to find a company that will treat you better, because there are companies out there, like the competition!

For years we were all told what makes Hy-Vee different from other chains and not only that we needed to be different that was how we came to be. Now it's that we NEED or HAVE TO become like the bigger chains to survive. We were always told we have the Autonomy to do what we think is right for out store and our specific market and now Autonomy means only what it take to go up and beyond what we are told what Corporate says we need to do.
If you doubt this ask to have a private one on one off the record discussion with a store Director or even Supervisor that's been around for 15 Plus years and let them tell you how much EVERYTHING has changed.
So it was all a BIG LIE. Even now they want cookie cutter departments and they say its for the customers benefit but in reality it's so that corporate can compare each store as closely apples to apples as they can so they can cut cut cut on an even plane. Talk to any employee that's been around and will talk with you off the record. Iv'e seen long time Store Directors into forced Demotion if they do not follow what they are told to do as far cutting hours laying off people arranging and moving around full time to part time employee's. They are literally in fear of there jobs where they make a great living from 200K+ at min to some that make a Million a year as a Store Director. When your used to that the fear is great just as it is for a Department head that makes 50K to now be forced to 30K a year it;s just not right.

Soon the tide will turn - during this pandemic our hard working grocery workers are finally being known as the ones who have shown up every day in the most difficult of situations. They ARE the HEROES.

These people are the exact same hard working individuals who have been cut in hours - losing their full time pay and benefits on top of it. They show up because they need the few hours they are currently being given. Even those hours have purposely been calculated to make sure that they are kept just under the limit of hours per week they need in order to qualify for medical insurance and other benefits.

Right now they are struggling to adjust to their new reality - the one that hit them just weeks before the pandemic arrived. They show up every day because they have no other choice right now. They need what little job they have left and they dont dare to complain for fear of losing the little bit of income they have left for the present.

But just wait... these same employees are applying for other jobs as we speak. And other employers who truly value good help will realize what has been going on just under the radar and start picking up these great workers.

For the present, HyVee will continue to hide behind the smokescreen of everything associated with the pandemic. The word really hasnt gotten out YET - but it will. And once it does, HyVee will be exposed for the hypocrites they are in spite of their “Heros” commercials and all of the other self-promoting pablum they spend advertising dollars on just to make themselves feel good.

It’s an old saying, but “the worm will surely turn”. And when it does it will be impossible for HyVee to recover and no place to hide. The light of day WILL SHINE AGAIN and when it does, those loyal and hardworking employees who took such a tragic hit will be called away with new jobs. No 2 week notice either. Why should they give notice - how much notice were they given when their entire life changed in a moment in a manager’s office? HyVee changed all the rules in the middle of the game... so they shouldnt expect any business formality in return.

It should also be remembered that before the pandemic hard workers were already hard to find. Once things begin to recover that reality wont change. Once the good workers leave they wont return. Maybe HyVee will be much happier with all part time help (mostly young people who care more about their phones than helping customers). The new help will stay about a year on average then move on. HyVee will be a perpetual revolving door - constantly training and retraining workers just to fill empty positions - over and over again. How’s that for cost savings???

It’s gonna happen... just keep your eyes and ears open. Those who knew and turned a blind eye to what has happened will be exposed as well. Its a dirty game but there are still good and decent people in this world who will stand for what is right once they have the facts.
