I am an actual data scientist in AV and will clear some things up.

Note: In this case, Business Partner is the term for Ford internal non-data science employees that Ford data scientists perform work

  1. There aren't many data scientists in AV. Additionally, a good portion of the data scientists didn't join AV until late last year/early this year. The DATA SCIENTISTS in AV haven't even been around long enough to waste billions.
  1. A lot of the data science work (if not all of it) in AV is related to the AV service(s) that will be released in 2022. Thus, you won't see the actual return until the future. Nobody is asking the data scientists to generate something that will put billions of dollars in Ford's account tomorrow.
  1. At then end of the day, it is the BUSINESS PARTNERS that run the business, NOT the data scientists. The data scientists can provide great work, but if the business keeps on changing its mind on what it wants, then whose fault is that? As a data scientist, I can be asked to perform an analysis, perform the analysis, share the info, receive praise from the business, but then have it all for naught when they change their mind months, weeks, or even days later.

It's way too early to call AV failure. Even if it does fail, there are much bigger fish to blame than the data scientists. As a data scientist, you can literally provide all of the correct information, but a business partner might not care, and may willingly make poor business decisions because they want to do it their way and/or there are already c-appy systems in place and they don't want to change them.

Makes sense, that's where all the gravy is going, with no return.

They are the best at wasting billions of dollars, and having NOTHING to show for it. No hope for revenue anytime soon.
