Thread regarding United Airlines (United Continental Holdings Inc. - UAL Corp.) layoffs

Can this become permanent?

I don't believe UAL can function with only 3,000 flight attendants long term, but this might be a way to get rid of those with higher pay and better benefits and replace them with cheaper (and less experienced - but who cares about that) employees.

Honestly, I'm really worried about this...

I do. I prefer to have younger and better looking attendants, like the foreign airlines.
If they are cheaper, both passengers and United will benefit :).

It's not like they won't come rushing back the nanosecond UAL is hiring again, it's not like they have anywhere else to go in these times. Plenty of Southwest and JetBlue employees more than happy to make the jump if it comes to that, they're out of jobs too, and airlines will be depressed for a long long time.
