My understanding of the term "furlough" means you might be brought back, though no promises are made, "Layoff" customarily means that your position has been permanently eliminated, and you are terminated through no fault of your own and if you wish to return you will have to apply for a job like anyone else. "Fired" means you were terminated with cause and that you shouldn't bother in trying to get rehired.
