Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Why not layoff 1/2 intel managers?

Too expensive, too many, they provide very little to the bottom line, too much ego, low capability, poor execution driving the delays, is your experience diferent?

They are the yes men that continue the cover up, it is only about fragile ego. That's why not.

Without strong engineering leadership at the top, any cut managers will just be replaced by the same.

Maybe Intel should employ psychologists to screen people for these positions. Intel tries to be objective by setting expectations for promotion, but what actually happens is people just say and do what they need to do to check the boxes rather than what’s actually in the best interest of the company and the group; they only do this stuff to promote themselves. Psychologists often know how to pick up on this stuff.

The very good ones long left Intel. They’re the one who had deep Intel culture, and did groom engineers career.

Are you seeing any q2 lay-offs ? Any voluntary separation (vsp) coming like other companies.

Yes, they do nothing except call meetings and demand that every issue needs a task force (alongside the thirteen other task forces you are participating in).

One very big problem intel managers create is meetings. For every problem the solution is let’s have a meeting. That’s just plain stupid. I hope that’s the next big culture change Bob Swan will bring.

Same can be said about many principal engineers, 50% good, 50% are average blokes got lucky by acting cute, staying away from trouble and aligning with decision makers, some just probably did nothing , just got picked for the quota. So is life. So let’s not complain. Some will get Coronavirus and others will not.

Managers simply screw up the good work done by the people below them, then claim that they (mgrs) fixed the problem.

When they did the 1,000 manager job cut back in the 2000s, many of the cuts were to first time managers promoted from the technical ranks. A lot of good people were encouraged to “grow their career” in that manner, only to be cut before they even had a chance to be evaluated. Meanwhile many of the more senior (politically-connected) managers were either spared altogether or temporarily relabeled as senior engineers. So careful what you wish for — it’s all in how (fiendishly) they execute the policy!

It's a real possibility if demand goes down for too long and the 14nm and 10nm groups get consolidated together. Especially since this new CEO prefers to lay off people based on job role, not ACT style.

Agree! Fact is even productivity of people who do work is suffering because of too many managers.

The last project I worked on was Broxton (left early via VSP) and all I can say is that the managers were as valuable as mammary glands on a bull.

Yes, these egotistical, do nothing managers deserve to be let go. They're a joke.

1/2 is pretty deep cut, but at least 15% should be achievable cut without any business impact, and would create slots for new people to move into. It's time for a SET style manager layoff for sure.

Good point. They should as these people are not really managers. Just handheld puppets for the aristocracy above.
