Thread regarding Sabre Holdings layoffs

For greater good

Current unpaid leave program ducks since you don't have any surety that you will have your jobs afterwards even you are doing it for greater goods.

Sabre could have come with a better plan where they can encourage everyone to take these leaves when they provide same duration job running security afterwards even if the pay is half. An example can be take 4 weeks unpaid and company assure you that you will get at least 50% salary afterwards for weeks. If someone take 12 weeks they will get 50% salary at least for next 12 weeks. People will do it in my understanding to have their employment secure, kep running their medicals and pay back to the company this way.

Seems like there all stupid people sitting on high profiles and don't have mind to throw these kind of better options .

Dallas Business Journal article April 10
“Thousands of Southwest Airlines employees have signed up for varying levels of time off and leave as the company looks to cut costs.”

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) has been offering employees unpaid and paid leave in attempt to lower costs as airlines deal with fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has zapped travel demand. Options for Southwest employees include Time Off Without Pay (TOWOP), Leave Without Pay (LWOP), or Emergency Time Off (ETO).

In March, more than 20,000 employees voluntarily took between one and 14 days of TOWOP or LWOP, said Bob Jordan, executive vice president of Corporate Services, in an internal message to employees viewed by the Dallas Business Journal.

"This totals just under 490,000 hours. So thank you. Every hour helps," Jordan said in the Thursday memo. "Please continue to consider TOWOP or LWOP in the coming months."

A Southwest spokesperson declined to comment on the internal communication. Dallas-based Southwest had 60,800 employees at the end of last year with 10,000 of them in North Texas.

Southwest is offering ETO in addition to the other two options. The parameters of ETO differ by employee group. Flight attendants, for example, were at one point offered 50 percent of minimum line guarantees for one- and two-month increments as part of an ETO option.

In April and May, about 3,000 and 6,300 employees respectively signed up for ETO. And in June, nearly 5,000 employees have expressed interest in ETO, Jordan said.

"The time off efforts to date will help Southwest preserve tens of millions of dollars in unspent salary," Jordan said. "But there is more we must do to ensure we have liquidity to weather this crisis."

Tens of thousands of airline employees across the country have taken some sort of leave, both paid and unpaid, offered as carriers look to slash costs.

At Delta Air Lines, more than 30,000 employees signed up for unpaid leaves of absence, and over 600 American Airlines pilots, often the most expensive front-line employee group, opted to take an early retirement package.

Even though most airlines applied last week for payroll grants that were part of the CARES Act stimulus package, carriers are still looking to save money. If airlines take the grants, they agree to not furlough or lay off any employees until at least Sept. 30.

That's funny! Take the unpaid leave to hike the Appalachian trail? To drive across the country?

Err... what?!

Hello! We are in the middle of a pandemic here! There won't be any traveling anywhere for a very long time!

When you take unpaid leave the only place you will be traveling to is your backyard and your local grocery/pharmacy.

If people could travel then Sabre would still have a viable business and we wouldn't even be talking about this!

Yes I would have volunteered for the furlough if that had qualified me for the enhanced layoff package in the future.

Maybe they will propose that for round 2 instead of going straight to massive layoffs.

This was a dumb move by Sabre. I think a lot of people would have volunteered for furloughs ... if we knew that when we returned, we would get the “enhanced” package if laid off. But no, try to help your company with UNPAID leave and then come back to get laid off and what? Get half the pay? Who makes this stuff up?

Why would anyone take it? To spend time with school-age kids while they are home. This might be the only opportunity you’ll ever get to do that while your kids are young.

You have a critically ill loved one and you want as much time with them as possible. FMLA provides 12 weeks of leave, but this gives you a chance to take longer than FMLA.

You’ve always wanted to write a book, hike the Appalachian trail, drive cross country, but couldn’t take off for a long period of time to live that dream. Or you’re just d*mn tired and want a break from life.

How many times in your working years do you have a chance to take off 3 months. Here’s your chance.

I think it helps H1B. Even when no pay, they can say they still have a job, so not get deported.

Imagine you're married to a healthcare worker and have 3 young kids. You have a choice of working full time while taking care of them vs taking unpaid leave for a while. Neither choice guarantees your job, but one might help your sanity.

I can not understand why anyone would take the unpaid leave option. Could someone please explain why anyone would take it.
