I’m not saying it couldn’t happen but I have never seen it. When cuts are coming the LL5s May appear to protect their direct reports but they’re actually trying to make sure they have enough direct reports to protect their own backside.

Depends
What appears as protecting LL6 may actually be furthering their own agenda.

An LL5 will cover up bad behaviors of LL6s to make it appear as though they are good managers. LL5 get dinged on there PR if HR is up in their grill.
An LL5 will cover up bad behaviors of LL6s because of relationships with other LL5/4/3/2. For instance the LL6 is a spouse or child of another LL5. Or the LL6 is a drinking/golfing pal.

Sometimes the LL5 just ignores bad behaviors as they are two clicks from retirement. Or they don’t want to bother with HR. It is easier to claim GSRs are the problem.

One LL6 made people miserable for 25 years, then one day he stepped out of bounds in the presence of the wrong person a week later he was gone. His protector LL4 had retired and he was gone.

To be sure the default mode is to protect other LL

IMHO most of them won’t hesitate to throw LL6 or GSRs under the bus to cover their own but ts.
