Thread regarding Lenovo layoffs

Can they really get away with paying no severance?

I'm asking about the U.S. I thought it was illegal to let go of somebody without severance? Isn't that just a firing instead of a layoff then, for which there has to be a cause? I might be wrong, I'm not in the U.S., that's why I'm asking.

But if it's possible, then it's really a lousy way to treat employees when the situation is already bad on all fronts.

Anything can happen.

Look at all companies that are contracting, they are cutting severance (IBM is a good example)

If IBM got away with chopping down severance as they did, then Lenovo certainly can and will. They brought a lot of the IBM mentality over, and Lenovo culture is if anything even more penny-pinching. They were already making groups bend over backwards with hardware and lab space sharing, and continuing to migrate roles over to Romania, aka the new Cheapland. They'll eventually get rid of all NA development and test jobs, it's all been going that way since IBM started it's Taiwan push back in 2003. Work on your software skills, or go to biz school and put on a suit.

#1 Regular Full Time Employees is coming in 1-2 weeks most likely. #2 Severance may or may not be required in the US, but where Lenovo is based in NC, they only have to give 1 month. IBM already found that out and the one month is from the time of notice to the time you leave. They consider that the month because you are not doing the work and it is a "gift" to be able to search for a job internally.

I have no sympathy for anyone that stayed in a Communist Company. Best thing that ever happened was getting laid off. If I was not and if I stayed without ever getting laid off, there was no real path to retirement. My 401k now and pension from the new job has me retiring at least 5 years before I would just quit Lenovo.

worked in china before in shenzhen as a step between jobs.

If you layoff people in china, the china labor law forces a package .. it is 6 month of salary + medical and dental and etc and government forced incentives, like retirement and housing fund contribute, plus your past vacations .. that is if you work for lenovo for more than 3 years. ..

if you work for lenovo for 1 year or more, it is a smaller amount than 6 months..

this is on top of the Lenovo package.

it is called N+6.. the N is what the company gave you in month.

In china, people are not anxious after being laid off, even though there are no jobs and people still enjoy life, they could always go back to their parents and move to their native places instead of large cities, unlike the US, once laid off, it is like sky falling for many folks..

human relationships are also important, the fabric of society is built on relationship and these don;t go away after laid off and people turn to rebuild and bounce back very easily.. there is always something fun and to do there

Are they not required to follow the WARN guidelines? I believe they are required to pay severance if there are mass layoffs, although I hope that does not happen. I believe we have got rid of most contract positions already (barring some exceptions) and FTEs are not affected. Fingers X

Nothing in the US requires a severance package. Many states are “at will” states and you can be let go for no reason.

Only reason you are guaranteed a severance is if your employment contract includes it. For example when I was hired the hiring materials clearly stated the severance package details.

If I get laid off and am not offered, at minimum, the details outlined in agreement, I can sue the company.
