Thread regarding IBM layoffs

layoffs second quarter

Our new CEO addressed layoffs at his office hours meeting today. I like that he is honest and talks straight unlike Ginny, A very nice change, I wish he was in charge years back. For those that DO NOT work at IBM I will not say what he said because I believe its none of your business since it does not effect you. If you lost your job with IBM In the past please move on. This site should be for those still working at IBM and Red-hat. He addressed layoffs in as much details as a CEO can express. if you work at ibm and had not heard the video, take a look. take care

I'm not an IBMer, but I do have a job offer (I know – it's odd that IBM hasn't rescinded it given the current climate). I haven't given notice at my current employer yet. I know this is a broad question and probably varies by division but, in a general sense, am I crazy to consider joining IBM in the next few weeks? My concern is that I take it only to be caught in the middle of a layoff.

“we have skills that are not so desired in the market”

Those will be addressed.

Which skills?

I am in GTS - I have heard No talk of Divestiture.
The only GTS "divestiture" happening is hiring people in India for roles which were in the United States.
Same ole

The video is on W3 on the homepage, in that top scrolling navigation section. It's still there.

IBM knows they will shrink. They also know that most of the divestitures will come out of GBS and GTS. In the past IBM has sacrificed approx 10-12 billion in revenue for The divestiture and a OTC cash infusion. I would expect that to yet again happen. When the dust settles IBM will be a 60-65 billion dollar company, but far more profitable per employee. GBS will shrink by approx 1/3, GTS by 1/2, and systems by power and storage. Krishna has shown his cards, and it’s just a matter of negotiating the final terms

People endlessly talk about divestitures because, logically, it would make sense to sell off the "outsourcing" part of Services (GTS and the AMS part of GBS along with CPS). They're shrinking, low margin businesses that have largely become commoditized and IBM's cost structure doesn't support that sort of competitive environment. But it'll never happen because it's an enormous part of IBM's current revenue. Same with the people saying IBM should focus 100% on "Cloud" meaning Red Hat, Public Cloud, and whatever legacy software can be crammed into a Cloud Pak. The problem is that would mean IBM would be a $10B instead of $77B company and neither the shareholders nor the execs want that.

Why are people posting here that IBM is going to Divest?
What would IBM Divest and who would they divest to?

I'm currently an employed ibmor and I come here to get the latest news on layoffs and likely layoffs. The OO in his arrogance thinks we all have time to go watch some CEO video when some of us are working 10-hour days and that is already more time than we want to spend on IBM. this is why all the downvotes because he should have simply summarized what the CEO said instead of pushing us to go watch the damn video.

The arrogant OP would do well to learn the difference between "effect" and "affect"!

Mr. Krishna did say we will reorganize this quarter (as we have been) He also said after that “we are always willing to take a short term hit” for the long term. I took away from that stock (he mentioned that) and PR. I’ve enjoyed Watson health and the many other companies prior. I had hoped a bigger Company would mean more job security. I guess IBM is just going in a different direction. I wish they wouldn’t have bought us just to Divest themselves of us. The last day of every month and the first day of the next month are agony.

What’s with the downvotes on the original post? AK confirmed RA’s in Q2 very directly. This is going to be painful but honestly necessary.

I watched the video agree, divestiture and resource actions in 2nd qtr. I'm actually hoping for a package to retire early. Anything more than 1 month severance would be welcome.

Krishna gave an interview on USA TV yesterday. Here are his exact words
In terms of divestitures, we've always pruned our portfolio appropriately. When there are pieces that don't align with a strategy or they become too commoditized for us to deal with them, we have done divestitures. And you've seen us doing that over the past two years," he said.
He also said the company was not considering breaking up the company.
"Our model is so integrated, it really makes sense for our clients," Krisha added. "And I think that need is going to accelerate in this crisis. Our clients are looking for us to bring solutions to them —to really solve the puzzle for them, and if you look at our services, they're really often linked to our products."

It sure looks to me like divestitures are the name of the game. It kinda makes sense as IBM sells non-strategic portions to try and recoup its IP that it invested over the last 20 years. The big take away is if you are working in non-strategic portions of IBM, you will most likely be sold
