Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Lesser of two evils

Not that we have a choice, but what are your thoughts on WFH permanently vs. salary cuts? Based on the earnings call today I gleaned that they’re planning on the salary cuts remaining for at least a couple of years. Would it be more palatable if WFH flexibility was permanent? If not 30%, would another percent be ok?

WFH is 1hr per day less work, in addition to savings from commuting expenses, extra clothing (Hawaiian shirts to align with upper management). If your commute is longer than 30min each way then time savings increase.

With 1hr per day is more than 10%, then the salary cut is more palatable but not to the 30% level and only as short term deal. Remember it is a supply and demand and if able shouldn't stay for another day.

The problems is in cases where the 30% brings you below family budget and it is not just reducing the money wasted in buying bitcoins or whatever waste you are accustomed to.....

I am going to leave too. Leadership is shoddy at best, the decision-making that led us to this point is not getting any better. The company is not mature, I feel like I'm back in 6th grade. My supervisor has some "lite" industry experience but no depth, no credentials, no life experience and all-in-all that's a bad mix. I am applying for jobs and would like to land one before I leave, but I could quit at any time, nothing holding me back.

I will leave as soon as possible, but for personal reasons. During this shake up people get promoted that are no where near management ready, and are actually a pain in the rear. My current boss is really an excellent boss, and to go to a non-experienced jerk will close the door to Oxy for me. I would probably work from home for the 30%, but that is just me, and I know many others that need the money to pay bills and save for kid's college. Look how much daycare is for some folks and that 30% cut probably paid for a good part of daycare. If you have kids in daycare you are really feeling it, but that is not the only ones. The same goes for people with kids in private school, college, and helping kids and parents with money. People need the salary the market warrants, and not one Oxy comes up with. WFH will work for some, and I would say the older and very young crowd the most. Those in the middle of raising a family and saving for college and the other expenses mentioned will need the money. Once things turn around people are going to leave as soon as they can. This goes much deeper than a 30% salary cut and the ability to work from home. There is something there embedded in Oxy that is fundamentally wrong, and it just seems Oxy is still in the 60's and 70's. I have settled for my job and do a good one, but those that want to grow their knowledge and positions will get the hell out as soon as they can. It is true right now, but never let someone tell you times are bad, and this is the best you can have. Once you settle or accept that you have lost. You can also counter that with the fact it does not hurt to look.

I will be leaving Oxy this month! I am so ready to leave. As soon as the market gets better, I urge EVERYONE to LEAVE and dont look back. Your mental health is worth more. Besides what does Oxy have to offer you? More work, less pay? VIcki wants you to be happy with the pay cuts!

WFH is not ingrained in Oxy culture. Not even this pandemic will make it happen. They need us back so we can get sick and die and reduce headcount. Positions will be infilled. Remember VG email urging us to comeback that Monday only to change their mind as Fauci spoke. They said will follow CDC guidelines that not even POTUS is following, TX Gov either. Where are the 14 days on decline before opening? He said he cares more about hospitalization rates. An ideal would be to allow managers, directors and the several VPs to go first and experiment with them. Then critical positions. Allowing cone to office on a need basis and being tested once a month if go often. Folks 60+ and those with pre existing conditions go last. But thats an utopian world we don't live in.

Yeah WFH for no more than 5% because I've had to get the worst internet possible in order to make my budget work with the 30% cut. If they keep it at 30% for much longer im going to ask for company supplied internet.

30% is NOT ok. WFH is worth something though I’d say 5-10%.
