I am seven years from retirement, and was laid off by HP. I was informed by my manager at HP that my dismissal was just about numbers. At HP, like many other large companies, you are only as valuable to the corporation as your current managers opinion. Their 2nd. Qtr. financial reports will be out in 3 days, and they will not be good. I would expect salary cuts, and possibly furloughs/additional layoffs.

Same. I was wfrd on 6/19 and was 6 years from retirement. Mostly older workers are being targeted. I was not offered a pay cut or other position, they decided to keep less skilled younger workers. We were told the executive strategy is to keep talent not experience.
I was laid off less than a year before retirement and a few months after I moved at HP's request. I think they were surprised I accepted the move package but if I declined I wouldn't get a severance. Take the best package you can get and get the heck out of that POS company.

I'm 2 years post retirement and didn't get laid off. So not everyone is dumped just before retirement. But I do appreciate the anxiety. I was worried I'd get tapped even though I was told my risk was zero. Your manager and second level manager don't have the power to save you if you get on the wrong list.
All too true. The brutal reality is that we are all just zits on the @$$ of the company waiting to be popped.
