@OP Automated railroads are common in most rich countries. The main thing preventing UP and other US carriers from full automation are the railroad unions. Once the unions are out of the way that won't be a problem anymore. The best part is that most of them voted for the current president who will sign anything put in front of him. There's something deeply poetic about how they keep stepping on their own d—s.

Autonomous trains are coming. When? That will depend on a lot of things but it's definitely sooner than most people realize. A friend at HQ has spent the last 3-4 years working towards this. I had no idea it had been in the works for so long. She guessed 6-8 years before it could be implemented and operational.

People in the 60’s thought in 2020 we’d live on the moon and have flying cars. Instead everyone is stuck in their houses because of a virus. I wouldn’t hold your breath on these autonomous freight trains. But sounds good I hope it works.

The future is here they just can’t get the programs or equipment running properly and they probably won’t have any of it running right in the next few years. Throw in the fact that a good percentage of the main lines run thru major metropolitan areas and not across wide open areas where nothing is around for miles, they won’t be able to run completely remote trains due to safety concerns especially in those areas so yes it’s a possibility but not that concerning at the moment.

It’s not a lance or up thing. It’s an industry thing.

Just wait for the political backlash from towns when they find out the chemicals they have coming through their town with no one at the controls. This is only a wet dream from lance and company. And this will be the last year for the foreseeable future with a Republican President so good luck.

Newsflash: Autonomous trains don’t have engineers.

Will a Engineer be required to handle the
Signal awareness log when the Con is
abolished??

Oh ok. The FRA already removed minimum crew size regulations to accommodate it. But I’m sure you’re right. Like you were when you said flat switching wouldn’t work, etc, etc. but hey, who knows better than you? I’m sure nobody.

Lol... it won’t happen until after ptc is mandatory next year. Then it’s coming shortly after. You really don’t understand your industry. It’s amazing.

The components are almost entirely installed already. Autonomous trains aren’t new. Cad, signal, ptc, dpu, trip optimizer, what more would you like? It’s a fairly easy transition at this point. Haven’t you been paying attention?

We can't even get the engines we have to work, and we damn sure can't recruit anyone to work for UP to design such a system. But the railroad is changing. They finally recognized how little most managers do and will do a large draining of the swamp.
