I was told that a few members and myself are going to be put on new assignments working in the field. I'm a data person who has no knowledge or qualifications to work out in the field.

lol, let me get this straight, you are going to yreassign our based-pajeet office engineers out in the field? omg, stay at least 10 miles away from oxy operations, holy cow. make sure you have some offsite emergency personnel ready to go. effing disaster those people.
Go to the field....getting away from the office politics is worth it regardless of where you end up. Field guys, for the most part, are a heck of a lot nicer and more respectful and glad when you work hard and help them. It will take a while to fit in, but in the end, you will have more memories and make more friends with a year in the field than you will in 20 years in the office. My best times ever where when I'd be out on locations overseas for sometimes up to 6 months at a time or rotating on the drilling rigs in N. Dakota. If you have seen the movie "Office Space", the ending scene about working outside and making bucks and the look on Peter's face is how I'd describe it when you start to like it.

Send our useless Managers , Directors and VPs to do some real work. It is easy to boss around and kissing a– of your VPs.
I am in agreement. Take whatever opportunity you can to do and learn something new.
Don’t sweat it, working in the field will be good for you.
They did the same thing in 2016, it is really not the end of the world to be sent to the field for a short term assignment. Be careful because last time they said people would be out for six to nine months which in some cases was almost two years. If you get paid, get good benefits and build your resume it really is not terrible.

Thanks for the update, HR. I agree that there are other options like LOA instead of quitting without another job lined up. But there are also many reasons to quit Oxy, especially if you find another job.
No reason for anyone to quit. If you are thinking about it, take advantage of the voluntary unpaid leave of absence instead. It’s in the FAQ on all recent e-mails
Voluntary, unpaid leaves of absence (LOA) will be considered based on cost savings and business need, generally for up to a maximum of six months. The company will strive to return an employee who is approved for an unpaid LOA to their former position; however, as is the case with all leaves, Oxy cannot guarantee that the original position will be available, in which case the employee may be placed into a similar position.
Employees who are on an unpaid leave of absence will continue on active status in Oxy’s records, and your service date will remain unchanged; however, no contributions will be made on your behalf to the Savings Plan or to the Retirement Plan during your Leave nor will PTO benefits accrue during your Leave.
Oxy will continue to pay its portion of the cost of your elected benefits, including medical, dental, vision, basic life, basic accidental death and dismemberment (Basic AD&D). To continue participation in medical, dental, vision and voluntary accidental death and dismemberment (Voluntary AD&D) and any other benefit coverage, you must directly pay your portion of the benefit costs as payroll deduction will not be available. You will not be eligible for occupational accidental death and dismemberment (OAD&D) or Business Travel Accident (BTA) during your Leave. I have heard they might move younger technical people into roles outside of their discipline as a way to keep them with the company and not get rid of the young talent. This happened at the last company I was at and geologist and engineers were moved to IT type jobs supporting technical teams, or the teams they use to be on. They thought they were doing a person a favor by keeping them working, and did not give them an out like layoffs. Legacy Oxy employees do not have protection like a the LAPC COC. By the way some liked the transfer and did well with the career move.

Not OP but same situation. They haven't said anything about that. It was strongly encouraged that I need to help out and do it. So I'm guessing either be forced to move or bust.
if you do not want to take the field position, did they offer you a separation package?
